Howe's: The Magic Anti-smoking Elixir? (Your Thoughts)

Just recently put Howe's Lubricator Diesel Treat and Anti-Gel in my '81 300D (w/84 engine/trans), and have been simply amazed at how much less the car smokes using it! I'm not seeing near the smoke I once did; I used to use Power Service's Diesel Fuel Supplement (white bottle) in the winter to avoid potential gelling, but think I'll make the permanent switch to Howe's. I didn't put that much in, either (a little over 4 oz. when filling a half-empty tank).

What has been your experience with using "special sauce" with your diesel fuel? I'm also wondering if it's possible that the local stations have switched to winter mix, which may smoke less, although in my past experience, I don't think that made much difference.

All other things being equal, less cetane = more smoke in our purely mechanical diesels. 75 cetane fuel reduced my smoke a lot even at high RPM and load.

In my experience, higher cetane will not only lessen smoke but also can eliminate low rpm nailing as well.
B20-B100 works for this and also I've tried the power service as well with good results.
STP diesel juice as I remember will increase the nailing and smoke as I've tried it, but that was over 10 years ago...

I use Howe's & Power Service for anti gel in the winter. My friend with well over several million miles in diesels swears by Howe's in the winter. He has not had gelling issues. I dump a half gallon of Howe's in our 250 gal diesel storage tank when it gets filled w/off road/farm diesel (not always pure D2, sometimes it will have BD in it). When filling the plowing equipment in the winter, I'll dose the machine w/PS. I still get the occasional gelling issue during sub zero weather, but for the most part I have no issues as long as the temps are on the plus side of zero.
