Another one bites the dust - 300TD hit by tree branch

We had some pretty bad ice build-up here in Portland, and sadly our neighbor's beloved 300TD took a direct hit from a large ice-laden branch - and I mean a direct hit!!

I talked to the owner shortly after this photo was taken. She said that she was going to look for a similar wagon with good body / bad engine, and pay for a transplant. That's the spirit!

Ouch indeed. One of the risks of parking on the street, hmmm?

Would be interested to know what value the insurance company puts on the TD.

Cars parked on the street especially in the wintertime deteriorate far faster than cars that live in a nice heated garage. Plus, they are subject to theft and vandalism. When you go to either sell or trade the car, both dealerships and individual buyers can tell just by looking at the condition of the car whether it has been garaged or not. I figure cars kept outside depreciate roughly two to three times faster than cars kept in a garage.

I am of the opinion that the insurance companies should create two separate categories for comprehensive coverage. One for cars that live in a locked garage and the second for cars that live outside exposed to the weather and thieves.

Darn!

I hate parking outside the garage: when the Volkswagen was in Sandy Eggo it got egged twice. Dad's Beetle has been stolen twice and had parts stripped once (while parked in the driveway).

No affiliation, but there is this: E4 82 Mercedes 300D Turbo 123 Station Wagon-NO Rust, Straight,Sunroof

Will let y'all know how my appraisal goes tomorrow.

Amazing window popped out and didn't break, know very little about structural body repairs but would it be possible as a repair?

Regarding being garaged, here in the UK your overall insurance will be higher if street parked.

Having lived in Michigan for years I'll disagree with you. Sometimes it is better to leave the car frozen. If a car covered in salty slush is pulled into a warm garage every night the slush melts and covers the car in brine. If it stays parked outside the slush stays frozen and doesn't do as much damage.

Of course a car that lives in a garage all winter and never gets salty in the first place will be kept in the best shape

Inside or outside, it's way nicer than anything I usually see around here (SW Ohio). I haven't seen a decent wagon in a long time.

Is that fixable?

If it was a good car I'd be tempted to try to straighten he roof out with a floor jack and some lumber. Maybe it's wishful thinking.

Add a junkyard tailgate.

I was thinking if both rear pillars could be straightened with another tailgate, could a new roof skin be tacked into place?

A good body man could probably weld on a new rear end from a car hit in the front.

Couple of hours with a chainsaw and hydraulic jack and it would be good to go. Tricky part would be establishing a solid surface to jack from since the fuel tank is under the back floor.
