Cleaning my W124 Tank
I have algae contamination in my 92. It's also got old diesel in there with water that needs to be drained. I'm going to drain the tank, remove the tank, strainer (ordered the socket) and clean the tank. I was told I should clean out the metal fuel lines as well. Well this car is 24 years old, I'm trying to remove as little as possible that could break going back in, or just get disturbed and something go wrong that's unnecessary and cost more $$$.
I intend to just run some biocide thru the tank with new diesel and have it make its way thru the lines and make it to the pre-filter, and main filter and just keep checking it and cleaning the filters or replacing them after I put new filters in. Is this a decent alternative to removing those extremely long lines and cleaning them out? After I do this, I intend to re-purge the motor as well to clean out the IP and injectors. It runs smooth as silk off of Diesel Purge. For cleaning the rubber lines, I just intend to remove them and clean them out with a plumbers brush.

I recommend your second paragraph but not the third. I've never used Diesel purge so I cannot speak to its virtues or vices, but have used biocide on several cars with great success.

Drain the tank and replace strainer.
Then use Startron enzyme treatment and it will sort the problem out in around a few tankfulls of fuel. I use it in my home made biodiesel and never have any trouble. Startron eats up the bugs and then they just go through engine and get burnt and exit the tail pipe, other biocides only kill the infection and then whats left blocks your filters. Give it a go and save yourself a lot of work. |

Murky-Benz: I think it's best to remove the tank. There is a lot of sludge and algae plugging up the filters. It's all over the filler neck as well. If you stick your finger in you can pull out sludge. It sat for two years with water in the diesel and algae growing.
