I was under the impression that my only hope was to find a Euro 5 speed from a 300 which would pretty much be unobtanium.

NO the 190 has the starter on the left side (all OM60X), and your 4 spd is on an OM61X with the starter on the right. You will have to use that trans that is made of Unobtanium.

I thought that car had the 5 speed removed for a 4 speed.

All of the 717.400 transmissions I have seen for sale seem to go north of $1000 for just the transmission. The 717.411 is much more common since it was fitted to the M103 and M102 in both the W124 and W201. Those are still pretty expensive too.

There's a W201 5-speed kit for sale on and off in San Jose. Asking $2500 last time I saw it. Don't pay more than a reputable dismantler like PG Auto wants for it. Keep an eye out for complete cars.

I wouldn't pay more than this - 1992 mercedes 190E 2.6L

$400 for a 6-speed and you'll get most of it back scrapping the body - 2002 Mercedes C230 Needs Engine

you can do it with some work and the production of a fairly simple jig, well within your skills!

How to adapt a W201 5-speed to OM616/OM617 applications

That's exactly what I did to my 190D 2.5 Turbo...took the 5 speed manual and 3.27 rear and all other needed parts from a 92 190 Sportline donor car. Also used the front and rear sport seats and Sportline suspension. I completely stripped the $500 donor, sold the salvaged parts and the stripped body carcass and basically paid for my whole 5 speed conversion including the donor car and all the labor. Nice ROI!...and the car is now a blast to drive, too.

Thats nuts. I bought a salvage title 190e 2.6 5spd for $800 that had been rear ended, fixed it with a large sledge hammer, some JY parts and rattle cans, drove it for 3 years and 40k miles until it failed smog, parted it out then swapped the transmission and a whole bunch of other parts into the 300D.

It was a good car but the interior was too damn small for me.
