My steering wheel now looks new!

(Photo now posted!) Well after 8 years of procrastination to do something with my steering wheel, I finally got the products to redye the steering wheel and shifter. The whole job took about 15 minutes. See the instructions on how to do this on a reply further below......

I tried black shoe dye and polish on mine, but it did not last long, or look too good. I would be interested in the materials needed to do mine........Rich

I had some Fiebing's black leather dye left over from my guitar repair days (used to make ebony really black) and it works great for this. Took me a bit to find it, as Stew-Mac is selling some cheap black ink for ebony now, but it looks like Amazon still sells it for a reasonable price.

This is the stuff I used

I bought mine from a shoe repair guy who told me what to do and how to do it. Turns out I could have gotten the stuff for less at Walmart or ebay, but I got the job done and it looks great.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Leather-Refinish-Color-Restorer-Dye-Cleaner-Preparer-Combo-Kit/151578577?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=2727&adid=22222222227056638767&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=160796170066&wl4=pla-268805132869&wl5=9010790&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=113548438&wl11=online&wl12=151578577&wl13=&veh=sem

Simply sand any rough spots down with a fine grit sandpaper like 200 grit. Use the cleaner on a lint free cloth to wipe the wheel down. You'll be surprised how much dirt is on there. Then clean your shifter leather while you're at it.

Let that completely dry (5 or 10 minutes).

Here comes the hard part....

Get a foam brush to brush the dye on. BE CAREFUL not to hit the steering wheel with your leg or you'll have dye on your pants. Maybe put your seat back and down as much as possible before starting. Start with your shifter so you can move around and not worry about getting dye on your pants from the steering wheel.

Brush the dye on as if you're painting. Then do the steering wheel.

When done, DON'T WIPE IT OFF. YOU'RE DONE. Just carefully get out of your car and let it set overnight or more.

It'll come out looking new!

Excellent. Thank you very much for the info.

My 560's shifter and steering wheel are getting to where they are just starting to show wear. I'm glad i won't have to replace them.
