factory om602 valve cover material
So when I pulled the valve cover to inspected my lifter I noticed the elbow doesn't want to come out. Then I started reading all the articles about it not being replacable. I guess my question is why don't people just cut an access hole in the baffle and weld it back or remove the rubber grommet and weld a fitting or bung on the top. These appear to just be standard alumunim. Would be better if it was magnesium, get an even nicer weld.

The crankcase/valve cover breather outlet on top of the valve cover?
There is a hard plastic hose and its attached ninty degree plastic elbow fitting. The elbow is prone to breaking when removal is attempted. There is a rubber grommet that fits into the opening in the aluminum valve cover, the plastic elbow has a barb that fits down into the grommet. After a while the rubber grommet becomes rock hard making the elbow difficult to remove without breaking it, Best chances are with the engine at or near operating temp, the grommet will be slightly softer and sometimes after spraying it with WD40 or something like that you can carefully and slowly use some broad wedge shaped tool under the horizontal part of that elbo and gently lever the hose assembly out without breaking it. The replacement hose/elbow is around $35-40 last time I looked. Plus you'll need a new nice soft and pliable grommet. I've made do with a nylon plumbing elbow, a section of 1/2"ID coolant hose and a MALE-MALE connector at the turbo intake boot to hold it together until a scrounged an OE hose assembly from the Pick and Pull |

Yeah, if this breaks I will most likely remove all the rubber and weld a plate across the top with a 1/2 or 3/4 npt on it. From there just come up with a combination of brass elbow to hose to reconnect to the intake piping.
