Has anyone attempted buy OM616 turbo parts from India?

I know that DB licensed the OM616 for production in India for a 4WD called the Gurkha. From what I understand, it is a slightly modded 616 with 617 turbo pistons and a turbo set for the 616.

Anyone know about this? I could get someone who visits India annually to buy the pistons and the turbo.

Your opinions please.

Especially interested in anyone who has experience with the turbos, soince I am told that 617 turbo pistons are NLA

There's a thread somewhere on this ...

They stopped making these a while ago ...

And yes, I tried. I conversed with someone from India and he said good luck finding one. I even created an account on "IndiaMart" -- no dice

Metric Motors (I believe) will build the head with Turbo Valves, et cet. Go over to S T D dot com and there's a forum member who goes by OM616 which was working on installing oil squirters on the OM616 block.

Won't the pistons and rods work from a Turbo in a OM616??

Don't the turbo engines have oil sprayers on the block that direct oil up into the head of the turbo engine pistons (there is a hollow cavity inside the piston head for the Oil to go in and out of)?
I am guessing there is no sprayers on the 616.

It's also not a 240D OM616 with a cut down OM617 turbo manifold.

It's a totally different crossflow head (which would be trick for a 240 but it's never going to just bolt on) injection was different, etc.

You'd really need a half cut or a donor truck to do it. I looked into it for a while when my dads 240D puked the engine to try to do something completely different. It just doesn't seem viable.

Feel free to prove us wrong and do something totally awesome.

here's the link ...

616 Turbo Short-Block build

However, 3 or so years ago I tried pursuing the information out there on the net from India and discovered they don't make this engine any more (new) and they are super tough getting one from the dismantler in India.

Now, having said the above,

Copart has began its auction in India. Maybe you could buy the whole car.

OR, getting the machining done here AND getting rid of the in-line IP and getting a Bosch VE rotary IP mod ...

Greazzer,

Bosch VE IPs are easy to get, and not expensive because cheaper than the ones on any MB. They are available esp in Germany.

Great info!

As far as doing awesome things, I still have to put a spare 717.951 in a R107/380SL that I acquired.
Plus re-build the first Citroen Traction ever imported to trhe US (1937) with an original engine
Plus rebuild VW 181 Things
Plus rebuild a 4 speed MoPar 318 AWD truck
Plus rebuild three Volvos
Plus rebuild a Citroen 4 door convertible.

Now you know why I sold Groucho Marx's 220S from '52 before he advertised Desoto: I had no room to breathe and too many projects.

Not including others, lol

Here's the guy who did the turbo and Rotary Pump ... And, successfully utilized the AAZ injectors (two stage). I don't think he did anything special to the engine -- just mod'd it.

I think if one can get the shim made and figure out a way to mimic the timing device end piece on the pump, --- then at that point if this is a "simple" install ? I have a local hydraulic shop with a fancy smancy CNC tube bender so one could get factory looking injection lines made. I would like to see how the AAZs really run in an OM616 or OM617 ...
