83 SD key and headlight warning?

Should an '83 SD sound a buzzer if you open the driver door with the key in the switch or the park lights on?

Yes, that's what my '83 300SD does.

With the DS door open, just inserting the key in the ignition lock will not activate the buzzer.
With the DS door open, inserting the key in the ignition lock, and turning it CW will activate the buzzer...then if you turn the key CCW back to the zero key position the buzzer will still sound if the DS door is open.
Partly removing the key about 3 mm will silence the buzzer.

Leaving the parking lights, or headlights on, will activate the warning buzzer when the DS door is open...whether the key is in the ignition lock or not.

^^^ X2

More specifically on the ignition switch: If the key has been turned to any of the "on" positions, then back to "off" and not removed, the buzzer will sound when you open the door.

There is a Key Switch, fed by fuse F15, going to the Warning Module. Page 118/2

Everything else on circuit 15 works. I'm guessing a PO disabled the buzzer. Where is it? Also, there's a problem with the seat belt warning switch. The warning light sans buzzer always comes on during the first glow/start and goes off when I buckle. Occasionally it comes on when I make a sharp turn. I'll futz with the buckle and it'll go off. From then it won't come on even if I unbuckle. Lots of other things to worry about

I believe the buzzer itself is inside the warning relay up under the dash. It is on a bracket together with the cruise control amp hanging off the brake booster. It's a pain to get to.

That relay seems to be overly complicated and poorly thought out. Several things can damage it and the circuitry seems to develop it's own little gremlins. My SDL has this fun thing where if the brake pedal is pressed and the passenger door opened, the buzzer will weakly start to buzz and the dome light brightens and dims with the warning lamp flashing. All other functions work normally. If the brake pedal is released, it stops doing it, even if the pedal is pressed again. Go figure! I'm sure there's a fault somewhere, but I'm too lazy to find it at the moment.
