1995 E320 Wagon Rear End on 1987 300TDT Wagon

My '87 300TDT has a bad rear axle. I found a complete rear end assembly locally from a 1995 E320 wagon. Both wagon models have 2.65 differential ratio but '87 has a 185mm differential case while '95 has a 210mm case. Does anyone know if the axle from the E320 wagon will work on my '87 300TDT?

210 mm and 185 mm represent the physical size of the gear, the case will be taller if the gearing ratio changes but should be the same width. Check the yoke too to be sure its the same.

I suspect it will not bolt in.

I know the driveshafts are different between the two cars. I actually tried to swap them, 87 300D into 95 E320 wagon.
IIRC, the manner in which the axle attaches to the pumpkin changed from early W124 to late.

Yes it should work. BTDT. We had a 95 donor wagon available but its diff was also bad due to the car ingesting a chain link fence.

We ended up using the diff from a 93 300D-2.5. Had to mix and match drive shaft halves to get it to work.

Thanks for all good information! Sounds like the drive shaft could be an issue if I try to use the E320 wagon complete rear end assembly.

By reading jay_bob's post related to W124 rear bearing it appears the axle shaft from W211 E320 would work on my '87 W124 300TDT as well, in Part No 210 350 84 10. Local LKQ yard has a 2002 E320 which seems to share the same axle shaft part No. I will check it out.
