air cleaner bracket options

Just broke another one.

This was OE installed about 2 years ago.

Since then I've tuned the engine, changed motor mounts, rack damper, etc, so perhaps the damage was done already when it broke.

The break is the extension towards the passenger wheel well. Not the two points attached to the manifold.

So it seems MTC and MB are the only options.

Any good experiences with the MTC bracket?

I wanted to get the old one re-welded, but that will take a while since the local welder is busy through next week.

I can get the MTC in the next day or two, or order from the dealer.

Any suggestions?

Not sure if its ok to drive with it free wheeling on one end. Although the vibration is only noticeable when the engine is shut down.

You can drive it if you can stand the noise and the fact that it might break someplace else.

Somewhere in the threads it has that you can put a piece of 6 inch length heater hose between the Air Filter housing and the intake manifold and that limits the amount it can wobble.

If the real Mercedes one broke I would not expect the MTC one to last any longer unless the MTC ones are the real Mercedes ones.

In the long run it is better to deal with what is causing the shaking. Not mentioned was a valve adjustment and rebuilding the Injectors. Both of those items took out close to 90% of the shaking on mine. The rest was new Engine Mounts, Transmission mount and finally he now rack damper pin.

There is Air Filter Bracket fixes in the by part Repair Links.

I got a set of balanced injectors from greazzer, and recently did the motor mounts and engine shocks.

I keep a regular schedule of valve adjustments approx. 12k miles.

the motor mounts were within the last few weeks, so I suspect the bracket was already worn down.

OK. Do you think it is still shaking too much?

Maybe it could be re-welded together.

In the attached pic I numbered the arms of the Air Filter Bracket. Which one is broke?

Don't know if it was on this forum or not but years ago someone said they made a whole new one with angle iron they welded together.

In the repair Links someone attacked another rubber cushion on the Air Filter Housing so it rested on the intake manifold to limit the wobble.

Wonder if someone has a parts car that lives locally to you?

I've seen some broken brackets on parts cars and the on on my 84 was broken when it arrived but it has been a long time even with the shaky motor in the 84. I have the rubber mounts between the bracket and housing adjusted so there is no stress on the mounts. The down tube is also secured as it is supposed to be. I had to dig pretty far to get most leaks stopped and refurbishing the tube mount was one of the benefits.

thx for all the info

got a bracket from greazzer.

will probably take my old one and get it welded with reinforcement, and keep it as a backup for when this happens again. probably in 1-2 years.

After breaking a couple of brackets I reinforced mine
with a construction tie from the hardware store.
After 3 or 4 years it is still strong.

What Rooster300SD did is decent. The T section of metal he used is found at the hardware store.

The Welding has to be done by someone who knows how to weld thin metal.

The T shaped metal bracket is found in hardware stores. The on in the pic has bigger holes then the other one that was posted but it was the only pick I could easily find.
