Transmission Help for 1978 207D
Hello All.
I currently have a 207D that has a stock 4 speed gearbox. I have plans to put a OM 617 engine in this thing and so I'm trying to find a 5 speed that will fit right in without much fuss. I've learned that the 711.113 Tranny was the 5 speed option to the van I have. These things are super hard to find (Does anyone have one that they'd sell?). Do I have any other options? Does anyone know what 5 speeds will fit into the T1 207D/307D ? |
ebay.de is your best place. There are also wreckers in europe out there with them, but they are hard to deal with if you don't speak the native language. also the 717.113 has an overdrive i believe. Other 717.xxx for the buses do not. they have a granny gear first and a 1:1 final gear. Those are 717.110. I think. Verify before you buy. Also a gwagon shifter would be in order. Look out, any gearbox designed for the g-wagon has no speedometer output. It is in the transfer case.

You can try a different route ,all jeep guys love the 617 for its robust and viable diesel alternative power plant.If the goal is to modify with the result being a 5 spd you may find this with a conversion but for the opposite reasons .They have the plate that converts their trannie for adaption ,you of coarse need to see if a jeep 5spd could work for your van without too much fabrication.

Okay, here's where I'm at and of course I have another question.
I found 711.113 transmission that will fit directly into the van... I found a OM617 from an 84 300D, but it has an automatic flywheel attached to it. My question: Would a manual flywheel from a 240D work with this combo? |
Yes ish. Mileage varies. My 300TD w/ 4 spd has a damper on the driveshaft, and presumably the 38 lb 617 flywheel, instead of the 20 ish lb 616 flywheel. People have used a 616 flywheel match balanced and indexed to the flex plate of the 617, some complain of vibrations, some do not.

I just brain-farted and realized that I have a perfectly fine flywheel on the 616 that's currently in the 207d. Doh! |
The 5 spd which originally went in to the T-1 vans wasn't a typical 5 spd. It was roughly a 4 spd with a granny gear. Not sure if there was much difference in the ratio of 5th gear between the 4 spd and 5 spd. Still stuck with a pretty low top end. Both of my vans with 5spd's topped our around 68mph.

The other thing you need to be aware of is that the intake manifolds on the 617's in the vans are not the same as the intake manifolds on 617's in cars. (I think). So you would need to source a van 617 intake manifold. Valve covers are different also, with a different oil fill. Also a turbo on the 84 is not going to fit inside the doghouse on the van. The OE 617's in the vans were NA, not turbo.

For everyone following along... We did it. We fit an OM617 Turbo with a coupled 711.113 into a 1978 207d. It runs and drives :)
Now, we had to make a LOT of modifications to the sheet metal and driveshaft and throttle linkage, and we had to rebuild the entire doghouse too. I'll get some pictures up if anyone's interested. Basically everything in front stays the same, everything in back is 6 inches towards the rear. |
Yeah, a manual behind a 616 is an easy fit in a W123 transmission tunnel, and changing a clutch receiver cylinder is no big deal. Put it behind a 617 and everything gets difficult because all of the clearances are less.

Well done on finding a 711.113. I have one myself. 711.117 is the G wagen version.

im interested to see your install/modification pictures if it isn't too much trouble. i am about to embark on that same adventure of installing a 617 turbo with 5 speed into my 207d! thanks! yeehaw! glad to hear you had success.
