I'm back.....a few questions.

I'm back after not owning a MB diesel for 15 years. The last time I was here it was Mercedesshop.com. Now it's time to re-learn everything I knew before. At least the service manuals are online and I don't need the cd.

I just bought a 1985 300CD. This is the 3rd one I've owned. First was a Nautical Blue with cream beige. I don't know why I sold that car. Next was Silver with black. Higher mileage and I didn't want to spend a lot keeping it up. Now is a Anthrasite with Palomino. All 1985's, all California models. The car is on the transport truck and is being delivered today. Now I have a few things to sort out.

1) The tach doesn't work and I've been told the AC doesn't blow cold. I'll look at the OVP fuse first. Fingers crossed it's that simple.

2) A PO put in a crazy stereo with 2 big amps mounted in the trunk. Hopefully this is why the fuse blew. All that will come out and a rebuilt Becker with Bluetooth put back in.

3) The map pockets are darker than the door panels. I suspect they were replaced because the originals had broken tabs. I'm watching eBay for the correct color. Does anyone know if the coupe and sedan map pockets are the same size or are the coupe pockets a bit longer because the door is longer?

4) Aftermarket speakers were added to the underdash panels. The sound couldn't be that great if they are firing at your knees but I guess with enough power pushing them it wouldn't be bad. I'm looking on eBay for both panels.

I'm most concerned with the map pockets. There are quite a few sedan door panels with map pockets for sale but I don't know if they will fit.

Well looking forward all the great info on here (again) and to keeping this CD on the road for many years.

1)my tach also gives out once in a while. I believe the tach amps go bad. apparently there was a guy that was able to re-solder his and get it to work. new ones are $$$

3)according to a dismantler/reseller website the fitment for the map pockets is for both sedan and coupe.

4)I believe the kick panels are coupe specific. but there are a few listed on the bay

Having owned these cars before, you might love self-torture. But, I know in your dry valley you can find many rust-free cars so smart to stay with old cars, and sometimes the devils you know are best. Worst part is the high prices and lack of availability of parts. Guys here contemplate if worth spending $400 for a new vacuum pump for a $500 car. My M-B cars appear to be approaching negative value, given the cost of parts.

This car was originally sold at Beverly Hills MB. About 10 years ago it went to Florida and was only driven a few thousand miles. Now it's coming it back to CA.

Coupe prices are going up so I don't feel bad about putting $ into this one and I got a decent deal.

Prices here for a good sedan seem to be between $4,000 to $10,000 for a really nice car.

Is there a site that I can go to and look up part numbers? When I restored a few BMW 2002tii's, I could go online and get part numbers and then take them to the dealer and order. I can't find an easy way to do this for MB's.

you just need to enter your chassis and all parts can be viewed.
same system that MB uses.
a little clunky, but definitely worth a look

it used to be free, but now there is an annual charge

or post a question and picture of what you're looking for and I/we can look it up.

I've been doing work on my CD for a few years, and chances are I've got all the part numbers you need

The car arrived. Some things better than expected, some worse. I have many things to work on. This weekend it gets an oil change and Diesel Purge and valve adjustment.

I need the antenna grommet but that's easy to find. I also need the rubber bumper for the fuel filler door.

The 10A OVP fuse was blown. I installed a new one but the tack didn't start working and neither did the AC

Thanks. I guess I'll pay the $75 because it will make my life much easier.

Regarding the ac and the fact that you have an 85. Your ac is tied into the tach. The tach sends the signal to the KLIMA unit. Your KLIMA unit then determines if your compressor will turn on. I'm thinking that if your tach is dead, then nothing is being sent to the KLIMA and the KLIMA is pretty much saying "sorry charlie". Don't quote me on that, but I believe that could be your ac problem.
While you are doing assessing..you might as well pull the klima and open it up to see that it doesn't look fried.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Isn't the EGR ties into the tach too? I have a thread on that I need to check out too. I have a list of things to fix.

1) No glow plug light. It starts fine. I used my multimeter and tested the ohms like Dieselgiant says. Some connections (1 & 3) stayed at 1 while others all dropped to 0. I'm not sure what that means since he said his bad glow plug went to 55.

2) I tore out all the old aftermarket stereo equipment and found 3 electrical connections that weren't plugged in and a vacuum line plugged with a screw. I also found out both seats had the vacuum lines disconnected and capped. I'm not sure why because they held vacuum.

Passenger side electrical connection

Left side trunk electrical connection

Drivers foot area vacuum line. Red with white stripe

Drivers side electrical connection

I think the two hanging are the old speaker wires/adapters.

The door actuators can either leak in open or closed positions..maybe they are leaking but still wanted trunk and gas flap functionality.
