1985 300SD cali 722.416 Transmission Failure
Had the transmission on my 1985 300SD go out with no forward or reverse.
Have Checked: -Fluid (clear bright no burnt smell) -Linkage (Had some one move it from up top and it moves the lever on the trans) -Drive train (In park doesn't move and in drive neutral and reverse moves and flex discs solid) -Vacuum (good vacuum from the engine and the line has good vacuum when drawn by a tester) I believe it is a 722.416 based on the case number (see photo) Any further ideas. Seems like a pump went out or something sudden. As it was working taken out of gear then nothing when put back into gear ( ie came to a stop into neutral then when ready to go back into Drive-nothing). Also if rebuild needed anyone near Warner Robins, GA that would like to teach me how to rebuild or a good shop. I've rebuilt almost everything else on the car but this might be a little more complex and need guidance. 357,000 miles trans rebuilt earlier at 267K . thanks Robert

You can check the pump by removing one of the lines to the cooler and seeing if fluid is pumped out there with the engine running.

If it turns out that the tranny is toast, consider getting an earlier 722.3x transmission as a replacement. The 722.4x are comparatively weak and failure prone. That's what I did on my project car. They are a direct bolt-in replacement.
....just a thought If you were closer, I've still got the 722.4 you could have to practice rebuilding.

Yes, the 1985 CA 300D's have the later 722.4 transmission. Those engines have different intake & exhaust manifolds and the starter is clocked differently, but I don't think that is why the transmission varies. I suspect they were just moving them into production a bit earlier and decided to limit that to the CA models. I changed to an earlier engine in my 85 CA 300D and it bolted up fine to my 722.4 transmission, so one might presume the reverse is also true (722.3 would bolt to 85 CA engine), as mach4 says.
I presume you verified the fluid level. I have found in several cars that it can be tricky reading the level when the fluid is low. It tends to splash on the stick and give a falsely high reading. Don't recall if that was one of my M-B. You could try adding a little fluid, since not much to lose at this point. You could always suck it out w/ a Mighty-Mite bleeder bottle. When the fluid gets too low, you can immediately lose any drive since the torque converter stops working. My 65 Newport is like that, suffering "morning sickness" where the converter drains back overnight, so I must idle in N for 15 sec to refill it, then the car moves fine.

Thanks for the replies. I'll add more fluid. Unfortunately I have to head out of town for a few weeks so more in depth stuff will have to wait. Any information on which earlier transmission would work. I heard the bell housing may be different and electronic speed?? I would love to rebuild it myself but would like someone to oversee my work to preclude missing things

The bell housings of gas vs diesel are definitely different.
On the 722.3 transmissions there are mechanical and electronic speedometer versions. The electronic version can go on either but the mechanical will only work on a transmission originally mechanical (due to oiling capability for the gear) My 380SL has an electronic speedometer and when I swapped in the mechanical speedo 722.3 transmission, I just swapped in the tailcone from the original gas transmission to give me compatibility.
