Window regulator/door panel
Rear driver's side window regulator gave it up yesterday. Did that job about ten years ago, so with some help of some DIY's here and what's left of my memory of that job, I'm sure I'll be able to figure that out. Do have a couple of questions though.
I have been out of the loop on this repair for a long time, so I'm not sure what manufacturer is preferred these days. I am seeing URO, Trucktec, Meyle and OE Mercedes as options. OE from Mercedes is out just for the cost and from what I recall, the quality is no better than aftermarket. Got concerns about URO because of all the bad press it gets here. So anyone with input good or bad? Second question has to do with the plastic clips that hold the door panel on. The plastic backing plate for almost every one of them has come unglued and the door panel was pretty much just hanging in place and clipped only at the top. See photo below. What kind of glue should I use to reglue those plates in place or is there another solution that you have come up with? I'm going to check on a new door panel, but all things considered, I'm guessing there is little chance I'll go that route.

Len,
I found this thread very helpful when I did the job four or five years ago. You may want to read it. You could simly JB Weld Epoxy the plastic piece back on making sure to keep any eacess out of places where it is not supposed to go. That however would not make it any stronger then the old Glue still sticking to the panes.
If you decided to scrap off the old glue to get a better bond you need to find some way to mark the position of the part before you scape it off. There is fast setting JB Weld wich would be OK because there is no engine type heat. You will also need to find something to clamp it down. I agree with D-911 JB for plastic is some awesome stuff. The most recent one I did the plastic frame backing plate had broken around the back from some rough removal in its past. It was like a jig saw puzzle but I fitted every piece before the gluing process. JB made an awesome repair. I do always order a few plastic pegs as those are always prone to breakage.

I think Meyle is decent...although on a recent WR replacement one of the welds broke immediately.
Going forward I will probably use MB branded since I don't do my own window work and want to get the best possible part.

I do have a green connector in stock that I bought years ago, but I'm leaning to just replacing the entire regulator as cheap as they are now. But you made me go find the green slider and that's definitely what is broken. I'm going to look for the link about replacing it. Maybe that's all I need. If one of you guys have the link at the tip of your fingers, let me know.
Thanks for your input. Len

50,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong!
If everyone here badmouth's URO parts, .......guess what??
My plastic connectors separated from the particle board backing, and I used hot melt glue on it which worked like a champ. I think your problem is different but if you need that info, now you have it! |

Thanks for the help and tips guys. Job is done. Hot glue seemed to do the trick. Window regulator has been replaced and door panel reinstalled. It's better than it was, because now the door panel is not flapping in the wind from those dislodged door panel pieces. No leftover parts either. Went with the Trucktec regulator.
