w123 Manual Transmission Clutch Line

I recently did a manual conversion on my 300d and when it came time to look for the clutch line, I had some problems at first. The line I am referring to is the 2 piece line that goes from clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinder. One half of the line is still available (although you will have to bend the hardline to fit) but the other half is not.

I did some measuring on the fittings and came up with a 12mmx1mm inverted flare. I searched and searched and the only place I could find one, was on ebay. They are stainless so that is a plus.

AN3 to M12x1.0 Inverted Flare Stainless Steel Brake Fittings Adapter 3/8x24-UNF

I used 2 of them, and a 24" section of -3AN stainless braided line that I ordered from jegs. It seems to fit perfect. I just thought I would make a thread about it, in the hopes that it may help someone save some time when they get to this point.

You came up with a perfectly good fix. As an FYI - in the future a trip to your local Parker-Hannifin or Swagelok store will yield similar results locally and most can make up the braided flex line, too (there's a press to swage the fittings on and most have that rig).

Hope you're now down the road.

Blazemaster, What gear ratio do you have in your diff.? How does it drive with what you have?

As far as I know, the car has a 2.88 diff. I have not had it on the road yet, but I should within about a week. I'm just waiting on some new exhaust parts.

I am running the standard ratio from my previous 1985 300D which I think is a 2.88. I think the performance is great when the car is lightly loaded. If loaded with 2 adults and a heavy trunk full of material like 6 bags of mulch, things really do change in a big way. Usually though, I am in the car by myself.

Well bad news. I bled the clutch today and the stainless fittings ended up leaking. The 12mmx1mm thread is correct but the inverted flare doesn't seal, it must be something else.

I did a little thinking and took my old clutch line with the cracking rubber line. I cut the male fittings off each end, and silver brazed them into the ebay stainless fittings so I could still use the -3AN stainless braided line. It seemed to work fine and I got the clutch bled after a few hours of cussing, with brake fluid everywhere under the car.

I will try to grab a few pics.

You can easily use all metal lines for that application. Put in a coil of steel line about 3 to 4" in diameter in the middle of the line to provide plenty of flex.
