Regluing metal backing plate to wood fascia around CCU
So after 32 years, the metal backing plate has separated from the wood fascia piece that surrounds the Climate Control Unit in the console of my 1985 300CD-T. The attached picture illustrates the situation.
Question: With so many adhesives on the market, has anyone had a particularly good or bad experience with an adhesive they used to re-attach the backing plate to a piece of fascia trim like I have? If so, I'd appreciate your sharing the details. Thanks- |

i don't think you need to go nuts with anything that strong. A low profile glue (meaning it won't increase the thickness of the panel) that can handle maybe some warm/cold temps. Maybe a high quality 3m adhesive spray even.
I'd just clean both surfaces very thoroughly - that is really the most important thing to do. Clean surfaces and you could probably use elmers (don't use elmers

3M adhesive spray. Should be clamped together overnight. Wait for adhesive to set up before clamping together.

I used some brand of craft glue ( E 6000 ? ) that comes in 4 small tubes per card ( so it does not dry out. ) or one big tube to do the same on my 97 C280 HVAC / Radio trim.
The wood on mine distorted so it no longer fit exactly. I should still have the package, I'll look and report back. |

Yes, 3M 90 is better than 77.

I've been really happy with Gorilla Glue.
The key, with whatever you use, is clean surfaces. Also, some of those clothes-pin style clamps work great.

If you use the Gorilla glue, spread it VERY thin. It expands as it cures and can leave ripples in a thin veneer. I wouldn't use it on the face plate. The 3M stuff works best and you can clean any "oops" with a paint thinner. Once you have Gorilla glue, you ALWAYS have Gorilla glue.

I used plain old contact cement on mine and it worked fine. The kind in a 3 ounce bottle with a brush attached to the underside of the cap.
