300d not starting after fuel filter replacement
i have an 82 300d turbo ran great saw the fuel filters were getting dirty got the parts replaced them and now it wont start. I loosened the injectors and fuel was coming out, tightened them down and still wont start, my primer pump is leaking but would that cause it to not start? also getting a weird burning smell when i try and crank it now, did i fry the ignition or starter? any input helps, my battery is dead now ha! thank you.

Yes, the leaking primer pump is also allowing air into the system. Replace it with the inexpensive more modern one that is foolproof. Your fuel system, when properly sealed, is self-bleeding. Charge your battery after replacing the primer pump and crank away. Crank no more than 20 seconds at a time, allowing your starter to cool down between. It will start.

Disagree. As I said, if your fuel system is fully sealed with no air leaks, the OM617 will self-bleed.

With an optimal fuel system, you're still going to be putting a lot of stress getting this thing to "self" prime. Who cares if it can? Why stress the battery and starter like that and take the 10 minutes it takes to bleed a diesel?

This is correct, why stress the mechanicals on the system. If the hand pump doesn't do it, I've use the vacuum oil extractor on the till I see fuel in the line, works everytime.

I still got nothing. Replaced the fuel primer bleed the system and have been cranking for about 15 mins. Still smelling a weird burning occasionally. It almost started or sounded like it wanted to.

I've got the battery hooked up jumping from another car and it still sounds like it's not getting enough power, could my battery be too worn down?

Did you do the filter change on a cold engine?
If so, try a full glow cycle before cranking. Also, did you fill the main filter with fuel before installation?

i drove it to get the filters and then changed them. Could it possibly be my battery? I was jumping it with a honda accord but would only get one solid crank and it would almost start then it would sound like my battery was too low again even though the cables were still connected.

If the Engine was running OK and you changed the Filter; even if you filter was dry if you pump enoung on the Hand Primer till you here a squishy or squeeky sound from the Fuel Injection Pump.
That should get the air out of the fuel supply section of the fuel pump and since the engine was running OK before you sould get no air into the fuel injection part of the system. As mentioned filling thel spin-on fuel filter also helps but you should it is still a good idea to pump on the hand primer till you hear that squiahey sound.
