how perfectly flat does an oil pan need to be
I'm ready to change my oil and ditch the very dented and RTV'd pan that was on the car when I bought it. I ordered a new Febi and laid it down on a very flat surface to check the rim/edge. I'm able to rock the pan a very small amount - much less than a millimeter. It seems with the way the edge of the pan is stamped and drilled for bolt holes that some amount of very minor unevenness is a given - we're not talking about a machined surface here. I plan on using a very small amount of permatex aviation seal on the gasket when I install new pan. Should I worry about using this new pan, and insist on using one that absolutely doesn't move even a hair when placed on a flat glass/mirror surface?
The one on my car is dented to hell but only leaks the tiniest amount.

A gasket, sealant and elasticity (of the metal pan) should absorb all of that uneveness. The pan containing the oil without leaking and and adequautely clearing the oil pump suction are the my functional concerns for the oil pan.

Thanks - I think I'll give it a go. Cannot be worse than what's on there now.

It'll be fine. Clean up the mating surfaces between the pan and the block, use a shiny new gasket, and torque it down to the proper values and you should be good to go. The oil pan on my Benz looks like it went through WWII and it still works.
