Photobucket 3rd party hosting ransom money

Has anyone noticed that many images on the forum are replaced with an image that says "Please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting. For important info, please go to www.photobucket.com/P500" ?

Photobucket wants $399 from me to enable 3rd party hosting and restore those images. Well, they're not getting a penny from me and I'd guess from the majority of photobucket users. Maybe they'll realize their mistakes soon enough and reverse their decisions and avoid becoming irrelevant and out of business eventually.

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photobucket-now-charges-399-for-third-party-hosted-images/

Update:

When you get the graphic "Please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting.", right click it and copy the image address, open a new window and paste in the image adress and hit return and you should be able to see the image.

I was wondering where all the photos were going. I use Picasa/Google and though the images still show up, they made it so you can no longer embed them in posts unless you know how to "cheat" the system.

It probably best to forget about Dropbox, Photobucket, Google Photos etc. Just upload your pictures directly to the forum using Manage Attachments. Do that first. Then start typing your post. When you want to insert a pic, use the paperclip icon in the menu bar and choose which of your already uploaded pics you want.

If linking a pic from another site, use the Insert Image icon in the menu bar. It will appear full size, but the others using paperclip will be thumb size. However, clicking expands them.

This the first picture

This is the second picture (it was a thumbnail to start with!)

Link using Insert Image icon:

I got fed up with Photobucket some years back. Always coming out with odd, inexplicable software changes. I found https://postimg.org and haven't looked back. They did a fund raising pitch about a year ago asking for small amounts. I sent them $30. Simple, reliable, no weird bells and whistles.

I can't believe people put up with Photobucket for so long, frankly. It's hard for me to have sympathy for those feeling the need to pay the $400 when they made everyone wade through ads, popups, and finally no access for users of Adblock at all. Should've seen it coming and moved to a different service long ago, but noooo, they kept making excuses on Photobucket's behalf. Meh.

Yeah I don't get it. I dropped photo bucket 5 years ago. I'm surprised anybody still uses it.

For $39 a year I buy a t2.nano AWS Amazon Linux instance and run my own web server. I can host terabytes of traffic per month if I wanted, with no silly restrictions. $3.25 per month seems more than reasonable.

I noticed the lack of my photos on another forum. I used Photobucket back then on the other forum, but insert images directly on this site. I too am not going to pay their "ransom" to get my photos out of hock......Rich

FWIW, I checked an old thread of mine here with copious Photobucket images and they're still up.

Maybe they haven't gotten around to everyone yet? Maybe it's because I have Adblock and they are targeting those first? Anyway I will stop using Photobucket.

Every one of my old threads on the other forum has the warning, and the photo/s are blocked.

I wondered what that was. I hadn't used mine in a couple years so now just deleted it...
