whats wrong with the red car: governor gear

found the check valve spring was jamming up pump gears, so out they went.

bits going back together: have a fresh gear on the governor nestled back in its hole

driveshaft center support & guibos all bad & up next.

yay me

all back together

she runs & shifts through all the gears, but

later & harder than i like, so some adjustment is necessary after consulting the oracle.

a big thank you to the pioneers of this forum that paved the way for this small success

in the 1991 300d

used the 2 scribes to remove governor and long 90* bent tip snap ring pliers to install as recommended in James Dean's thread on the subject.

not an especially difficult job, but with the full summer heat/humidity in my gravel driveway, whilst recovering from an open fracture + 4 stiches through my thumbnail, it took me a week to do.

backed off the modulator 4 (!) turns & got acceptable shifts

cobbled together a guage w/parts loaned from blue car but in the excitement didn't record pressure but did note it took 4 turns to get to the 47psi its supposed to be.

back to shifting hard & weird again.

need to find more power. with no kickdown, the old blue 617 is absolutely kills the red 602 off the line and this seems wrong to me. however, @ 65+mph the red car does everything better which is how it should be.

i think it's time to lubricate & inspect/adjust linkages & cables, i've been reading up in the archives. also need to get some vacuum readings while driving

one more thing: at the end of the throttle cable, there is about 1/2" of travel before the linkage begins to move, not much adjustment left on the barrel. could this be a part of the problem?

Yes (for your shifting problem), Maybe (for the slow acceleration problem). Do you get full stroke of the linkage on the injection pump: When the accelerator pedal is held to the floor, is the injection pump lever moved against the full throttle stop on the outside of the pump?

I'd be suspicious of the ALDA (leaning out with age), unless all performance was normal prior to the transmission problem.
