190db leaking oil out of exhaust manifold

Hi Sirs-
I'm the one with the loose connecting rod. I fixed that and posted a video of the engine running on blocks. Seemed to run fine. Well, I started it again last night and I'm getting oil dripping out of the exhaust manifold when I took the exhaust pipe off. I also noticed that when I pushed the throttle a bit it blew white smoke out. Any thoughts would be appreciated!


Could it be valve guides? exhaust manifold gasket? Thanks!


I only run the engine for a couple of minutes each time, worried of course about overheat.

Valve guides / stems would have to be very bad and valve seals missing to have liquid oil coming from the exhaust.

Given the previous engine " rebuilder" didn't tighten a connecting rod cap beyond finger tight, I vote for a upside down / missing / broken piston ring. If you do have a broken piston ring, running it will damage the cylinder wall.

As I stated in the other thread, take the engine completely apart and check everything.

Once you get everything fixed, don't run the engine without a load because the cylinder walls will glaze / engine will burn oil and rings won't seat in for a long time.

Loading the engine consists of idling just long enough to get up to temp then ,while driving, accelerate the car at 20 % RPM and load ( throttle ) then close the throttle and slow down. Increase this in steps to 75 % or so then let the let the engine cool. There is no need to rev the engine any higher than what you would do pulling a steep hill.

The object is to build cylinder pressure so the rings are forced outwards against the cylinder walls.

Why are you worried about overheating? What is wrong with the cooling system?

You're right I may have to take it all apart. I hesitate to do this because
1) I only paid $200 dollars for this engine
2) My expertise is pretty damn limited. Just about everything I've done to this engine is the first time for me. It's been pretty fun but quite a challenge.


When I got it, the timing belt was off and injection pump was in a box. I had a hell of a time getting the IP timing done.


Even with my limited experience I think the pistons were done correctly. The cylinder walls were cross hatched after honing, the pistons were brand new. All the bearings replaced. I think who ever had the engine just didn't finish it or was interupted. I guess I should have checked the torque then but Who knows where to check/start on something like this.


When I fixed the connecting rod bearing , I noticed everything still looks super clean in there.


Very interesting about loading the engine. I figured you'd want to run it with no load when you break it in. I didn't realize it needed load to get the pistons to expand.


I've got it on blocks in the driveway with no cooling attached. just a bare engine!


I didn't put it into a car because I wasn't confident enough to install it.

Upside down piston ring?!?

Sounds like an oil pump to me.
Rebuilding a rebuild is not one of my favorite pastimes. Sometimes like launching a kite with a boat anchor attached.

Want to see this engine repaired and purring. Good luck!

Is that a surprise for an engine that is fueled with oil?
