1996 E300 W210 Exhaust mount bracket weld broken. Fix?

The 1996 diesel has a two-piece exhaust system. The front half has a C-shaped flange welded to one of the two pipes, which in turn bolts to a hanger bracket (see pic). On mine, the welds have rusted through, so the flange is detached from the pipe. This means the front section is supported only by its attachment to the exhaust manifold and by the clamp to the rear section. Not good. Plus it rattles.

I'm no welding expert, but I don't think you can re-weld a rusted joint. Any brilliant ideas for an alternative means of supporting the front section?

Thanks,

Paul

Don't know if its a brilliant idea, but something similar to this hanger might do the trick?

Clean it with a grinder and reweld, that joint has to be solid as it bolts to the gearbox bracket and holds the exhaust solid.
If it isnt a solid joint and it starts to move around it will let the pipe wwaken and break away directly behind the catylitic converter
