'83 240d how to install rubber bumper strip?

Is the idea that you attach the two strips to the bumper first and then somehow slide or roll the rubber strip onto the mounting strips?
Or do you attach the mounting strips to the rubber strip first and then attach to the bumper?

I found this thread- so this answers my question. Now, whether I can get this ancient rubber to flex enough is another story.

I put the plastic on the chrome first and slid the rubber on and around. As vstech said, very diffuicult. It took me several tries in warm weather, with soapy water sprayed for lube, much pushing, pulling and swearing but eventually I got it. It did pop off a few times. Have fun and for God's sake, keep the children out of earshot!

Hmm, I should have read the thread first. Sounds like he had an easier time than I did, but I think I tried starteing in the middle too and it wasn't working for me. Let us know how you did!
