OM606 glow plug hole trashed
1 Attachment(s)
Y'all!
back story: My friend just got this '98 E300 turbo diesel about a month ago. A couple minor issues to start with but got those sorted out for the most part and all has been fairly well so far... http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/387614-98-e300-td-flashing-triangle-light.html NOW: he was driving the other day and had some kind of catastrophic failure. Loud noise from the engine, smoke/steam/fumes under the hood, no power. Tow truck time. went over yesterday to help him figure it out. pulled the intake manifold and saw the problem right away. Previous owner had JB welded one glow plug into its hole! JB welded glow plug had blown out. see pictures. So, i'm getting together a plan to try to fix this. Gathering info from the interweb and soliciting advice and ideas from you all. Thinking about using a time sert thread repair thingy. looks like the GP hole in the head is still mostly intact. very small amount of original tread left. Question: looking at the 12mmX1.25X15mm thread repair. dose this size up with the GP for a om606?? i am personally least experienced with the om606. all advice and ideas are welcome. Thanks! |
This is a machinist issue and perhaps not really a mechanic's. I am betting you could find a local, indiy machinist which would fix this for well under a hundred smackers and you will be getting all his years of experience and skills....

That is why I suggested a machinist. He already has all the inserts and the tools, and the years of doing this over and over.. For the price of buying a kit, you could probably get a machinist to do it and you would have no learning curves. I am guessing this is a one try or one mistake deal.

I'm going to call Mintz and see what they say. having to pull the head to get it in their shop would significantly increase the difficulty on this one. If they could do it in situ then i will seriously consider having them do it.

This is the exact, and I mean EXACT thing that happened to my car, right down to the JB welded bolt in the GP hole.
I have the complete Time-Sert kit to repair it, including the inserts and the special tools to prep the hole. There's a thread somewhere about my repair from about 10 years ago. |
