'Rena 2.0' braking news

'Rena 2.0', my faithful 83 W126 300SD daily driver, was literally crying out for new brakes recently.
So she got new front brake rotors, front brake pads, a rebuilt PS front ATE caliper and used front brake sensor harnesses.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/388233-horrible-screeching-right-front-wheel.html
She still needed new rear brakes as well.

I had gathered most of the parts for a long planned brake upgrade for 'Desert Rose', my 78 W116 300SD.
I decided 'Desert Rose' could wait and 'Rena 2.0' was in greater need of some but not all of these parts.

This Labor Day weekend I:
1) replaced the broken PS brake sensor harness clip with one from Pick-n-Pull,
2) installed 4 new stainless steel flexible brake lines from Deerfield Precision,
3) replaced the rear Bendix calipers with more robust rebuilt ATE wagon calipers (same pads but 42mm piston vs stock 38mm)
no heatshields though with the rebuilts (the Bendix calipers did have heatshields),
4) installed rear OP rotors,
5) installed rear OP ceramic pads,
6) replaced the parking brakes with new Textar brake shoes and hardware
(the caliper bolt retention plates were an unexpected bonus - the previous rear calipers didn't have them),
7) cleaned the wheel bolt threads in the hubs with a M12 X 1.5 tap
8) installed M12 X 1.5 X 40 studs - H&R Quick-Safe Stud Conversion Kit # 2631412,
9) mounted Lorinser RS 90 16 X 8 et 22 rims, 225/50R16 tires in front 225/55R16 tires at the rear,
10) installed McGard acorn style splined lug nuts and wheel locks
11) re-bled with Motor Medic DOT 5 brake fluid
12) bedded in new rear brakes, extra hard to steer as the PS belt went AWOL on the commute home on Friday after stopping at Pick-n-Pull in Newark

The tires are old, so the next step is new tires...at least in the front as they are not legal tread depth-wise.

I think the Lorinser RS 90 rims look better on a W126 chassis than on a W116 chassis.
More photos to come...after I get the PS belt installed.

'Rena 2.0' is a rescued beater, whose old 14 inch Bundt rims have pitted paint and curb rash, so the stock brake pad dust was not a cosmetic issue in the past.
This was her first brake job in my five years of ownership.

The front OP semi metallic brake pads supplied by my independent mechanic a week ago were to get her back on the road ASAP.
They were what were available on the shelf at IMC for next day delivery.

Since I just did the front axle, I figured I should do the rear axle brake job as well.
I had new Textar parking brakes for my first diesel (83 W123 300D), but she died on a road trip before they were installed.
I asked my independent mechanic to also order the most inexpensive stock rear rotors and pads from his IMC supplier.
I was surprised to get ceramic pads.

Late Sunday I actually installed the rear pads in the PS rear caliper, when I had to close up as it was getting dark and past dinner time.
Sleeping on it and knowing I plan to keep 'Rena 2.0' as my daily driver, I decided Monday moning to swing by work and pick up the rear ATE wagon calipers and Lorinser 16 inch rims originally intended for 'Desert Rose'.

Today I picked up the Continental power steering V-belt from my independent mechanic.
I'll post photos of 'Rena 2.0' with her new stance in a day or so.

If anyone here needs used rear Bendix calipers (for cores), they are free for the asking.
Otherwise they will go to the metal scrap bin at one of the Pick-n-Pull locations in the next few weeks.

I'll probably swap out the front pads for ceramic ones in the near future as they will make too much dust.
They didn't cost all that much.

Did you change the hoses and repack the bearings?

Thanks for the great pointers.

Yes, changed the flexible hoses on all four brake calipers for stainless steel braided flexible lines from Deerfield Precision.
(Item 2 on the first post of this thread, and one is shown in the photos of the DS rear brake)

No, did not repack the front wheel bearings...yet.
I planned to repack them but I ran out of the Amsoil red synthetic wheel bearing grease I usually use.
I will repack them when I change the new front semi-metallic pads to ceramic pads.

On 8-27-17, the front hubs spun smoothly, with just a little drag, after the calipers were removed.
The wheel bearing grease was the official green MB grease that looked clean and smelled unburnt.
The wheel bearings obviously did not need to be replaced and I felt confident it was okay to button them up with the original grease.
I made note of the clock position of the split portion of the locking nut and reset them to the same position on reassembly.
The drag felt about the same.
I know the FSM calls for using a dial indicator, but I don't have one.

With new wheel bearings, simultaneously rotating the hub CW and hand tightening the locking nut until the hub stops is the first step I use.
Then I back the the locking nut two clock hours CCW (60 degrees) and tighten the hex set screw.
Finally, I verify the hub will rotate about half a turn before it slows down and stops.
This seems to work well.

Very nice work, I hate brake work, so it's always something at the end of the list. I'd suggest matching tires sizes front and rear for more rotation possibilities.
