W115 long runner intake install in a 78 W116 300SD
Finally got around to installing the W115 long runner intake in 'Desert Rose'
Clocked the original Garrett turbo and installed 90 degree elbow silicone adapter from turbo outlet to W115 intake manifold. Installed ceramic coated exhaust manifold that was drilled and tapped for pyrometer probe and copper collection tube for exhaust pressure sender. Installed ceramic coated intake manifold with threaded adapters for stock boost sense line and boost pressure sender. Temporarily connected a cone filter until I decide where to place an enclosed airbox. Crankcase vapors and vacuum pump air output connected to turbo air intake tube just like stock. Still to do: fashion pigtail extension for boost pressure sender wire, connect exhaust pressure gauge and exhaust temperature gauge, connect oil catch can, run a crankase oil recovery line to the sump, select location for enclosed airbox. Years ago my initial thinking was to relocate the battery to the trunk to gain room for the air box. I may be able to find some room under the battery tray or behind the DS headlights. Will update, with photos, as each of these items get sorted...it may be a while. For your viewing pleasure here are some photos of the work done to date.

That car is a legend. Your manifolds look nice. I just got done installing non-EGR manifolds myself. The factory air cleaner has been driving me crazy, but I'm almost done with my custom unbreakable air cleaner mounts. The previous owner had a custom "hot air intake" system. Basically, it was a cone filter attached directly to the turbo and it melted from the heat.
The battery location in the W116 is kind of annoying as it makes it so you really can't fit an airbox like you can in a W123 or W126.

Hello Alec,
do you have more pictures of your intake manifold and piping/filter setup. This looks like the route I want to go. I too am tired of dealing with broken air cleaner bracket and mounts. Thanks, Inshan |

Attached are two photos taken this afternoon. The original factory setup on my car has the crankcase breather vapors directed to the turbo intake duct, which also exists on the current setup. Oil does seep out of the air duct and drips onto the PS motor mount and gets sprayed by the fan elsewhere in the engine bay. Every so often I degrease the engine bay yet again. When I get around to fabricating the bracket for the catch can and actually install it, that ought to eliminate the leak.

Thanks Alec.
I bought a knockoff Mann and Hummel provent 200 and plan to plumb it in, along with an aem dryflow filter. Also considering moving battery to trunk. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |
