230TE manual transmission in a 300TD?

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1983 euro 230TE 4 speed manual with only 108k. I can prob get it for around a grand since it's been listed on CL for several months for $1,500. I was toying with the idea of putting that manual trans in my 1984 300TDT in place of my auto. Does anyone know if it would be a direct bolt on like it would be for a 240d? I'm sure the shift linkages and driveshaft would be the same, but what about the bell housing?

I'd look at the placement of the starter. If its on the passenger side of the engine I'd expect it to bolt in.

The 230T has a 2.3l m102 engine. The starter is on the driver's side. So no, it will not bolt up.

Just get yourself a junkyard 240 motor, transmission, shifter, clutch pedal, tranny support and front driveshaft.

As DV typed, the starter will be on the wrong side ... That's probably a 717.401 tranny ...

The 230T has a 2.3l M115. The 230TE has a 2.3l M102.

So the one with the 115 motor will work with the other 123 cars but the other motor is like in the 190....right?

The 230TE transmission should work behind an OM601/2/3. I don't know how the M115 bell housing compares with the OM615/6/7. The transition plate looks promising.

Looks like this 230 is very similar to the 240 engine....may be same block and crank.

The above is definitely an early 2something. The later 230 ('83) is the same engine that is in a 190E 2.3 with the starter on the left side, and has an aluminum cross-flow head.

Oops, that was a typo. 230T is an early w123. 230TE is the later w123.

That trans will bolt up to a 615, 616 and 617. The m115 share a lot of physical traits with the 615 and 616.
