Where did this oil come from?

Sunroof cable tube, antenna motor or something else?

I don't think that's oil. That is rust proofing / shipping stuff I think.

Is it possible that something spilled in there at some point? My SDL had some nasty goop that looked and felt like oil in the trunk floor, but turned out to be liquid laundry detergent from who knows how long ago. Found out when I washed the carpeting and it foamed up and smelled like Tide!

It wasn't a spill according to the carpeted panel that covers that area.

It has a similar color to some of the foam that''s used in these cars. I have never had that panel out before. This w126 has not been driven in almost a decade and I just figured something was amiss there.

The mast is broken off the antenna and I was planning on changing the entire assemble since I have a couple more. I also planned on restoring the sunroof too.

is it liquid/runny, or more waxy? because there is a yellowy cavity wax sprayed into those crevices in the trunk and inside rocker panels, etc.

With the sunroof cable housing right there, that would be my guess. Perhaps the end isn't crimped tight.

That car sat in the Sun for along time. The gray interior was burnt. The vinyl was crispy, the leather crumbled and the plastic was bleached to a yellow. Even the rear floor mats were bleached to a pastel blue.

It became a project car due to the total lack of rust. The battery tray was in good shape but the 3.8L exhaust burnt a spot just above the muffler.

If the thick, yellow liquid there is some form of wax which has accumulated due to a melting type process then I suspect there may be a similar situation beneath the opposite panel on the passengers side. I'll check that out.
