Yes, that is the speedo cable.

That may very well be the case. But I would love to know the build date of this car and what the VIN is to look up the data sheet. It should give us a clue of what trans it has.

Yes, that is the speedo cable.
It could be, but it could also be the electronic input. There is also the kickdown and neutral safety switch harness on that side.

You can probably see the speedo cable going into the lower firewall. Or if you get it on the lift again, check out the trans ID number.

Where is that found? I don't have a lift but have ample equipment to get a car well up in the air, which I'll be doing before long for a trans. fluid change.

SPEAKING of which, meant to ask: what is the original fluid spec for these transmissions? Seems most people use DexIII, Mobil ATF, or other, but I'm curious what the original spec was even though I'll probably wind up putting Dexron in it.

Look on the passenger side of the transmission. There should be a stamped number on the edge of the case above the pan.

Just use fluid that is compatible or previously serviceable to Dexron III

When applicable I'm partial to Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc - any problem with that?

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but I have a 81 non-turbo CD. It has a build date of 4-81. My research shows that 335 NA CD were built in 81, and 777 turbo models were built in the same year. How can I determine how close to the end of the NA run mine is? WDBAB50A0BB007329 Just curious.

Thanks! On my way to get it today - hitched a ride with my BIL (going to visit his girlfriend in KC), get the Benz on the lift tonight to do the carrier bearing and oil/filters/belts, then drive 'er back home through Cairo and Paducah tomorrow.

What I can gather, is your car is the 162 of 335 123.150's built in 1981.

And, that his is serial 7,329, appears to make our cars 174 apart over approx. 4 months. Neat.

BTW, DeliveryValve, my speedo number is 123.542.85.01. I had it out the other day checking out the odometer and it has a mechanical cable running to it as well as a mech. oil pressure gauge. Couldn't see that the gear was loose or slipping on the shaft so I dabbed a little grease on the gears and put it back in, but it's still intermittent at best.

Yep 123 542 85 01 is definitely a mechanical speedo.

I take it you got # 1 safely home alright.
