The coupes came pretty loaded up. I doubt there were many options available in the US. I don't know if anybody mentioned it but they received the turbo motor a year before any other model, more or less.

Guess I had lagged behind posting any more pics of it after I got it home. They're kinda hit and miss, mostly shots intended for social media. If there are any particular areas that ya'll would like to see detail shots of just say so.

The first shot is at the vineyard I work at part-time.
The 240D is a stick shift car driven by one of the employees of the local Auto Zone.
The 560SEL has been sitting in a parking lot off of main street for a couple weeks - starting to get curious about it.
Was replacing the bevel gear (PTO box for the rear wheels) on a Volvo XC90 about a month ago and had to make a trip to Lexington for parts.

Thanx for the pix and telling us about this good looking Coupe .

I nearly bought a white '81 for $800, I'm still torn that I didn't because I spend so much time in the Mojave Desert .

Please give us some under carriage photos when you can .

The dribbles of ATF in that photo looked pretty brown, I hope you know the torque converter has a (5MM IIRC) drain plug too .

I'm somewhat envious of you now .

It was fairly dark. Not black or burned smelling, but I'd added somewhere around 3 qts. of fluid since reviving it almost 3 months ago. Yes, I drained the TC. I have to say, Mercedes really got the transmission service points right - only 6 pan bolts, rubber gasket, and drain plugs on the pan and converter. This was the first time I'd changed the fluid or even examined the bottom of the tranny really close and I did it in less time than it would have taken to do the Turbo 400 in my GMC.

Ha, I need to track down a 14MM allen socket for the diff. plugs, then I'll be back under it to change that fluid and will try to snap some pics then. But don't get your hopes up, it's spent plenty of time in midwestern urban winters so there's some rust starting, and she's plenty greasy up front where the oil leaks have gone undisturbed for quite a while.

The pillar-less coupe is sharp in any form, but in daily use I wouldn't mind if it were a sedan or wagon. But regardless, one of my favorite things about this car is the sun roof. This is my first car with one and I've never owned a convertible, so to open it up on nice days and enjoy the extra air, light, and handiness of sticking my hand out the top to wave at people I know (or the occasional fellow W123 driver) is pretty great.

Question Topic Drift

Oh ~ you also have a TH400 ~ my 1980 Cadillac Fleetwood S & S M Hearse has one and the TH400's pan lip leaks, I've replaced the gasket and it leaks again getting worse bit by bit .

Here's my question :

Are all TH400 tranny pans the same ? . I want to buy an alloy one to halt the leaks permanently but the places that sell them, don't care about old Caddies so they cannot tell me if it'll fit or not .

Do you know ? .

TIA,

Being a GM guy for years having had many a Cadillac, I believe all GM turbo 400 transmissions share the same pan. I even had a turbo 400 in my '74 Jeep Cherokee, and I changed the case from the AMC bolt pattern to the B-O-P-C pattern, and put an 8.2 liter Cad engine in front of it. The AMC trans had the same pan......Rich

I believe rollguy is right, there were a few different bell patterns but the pan area was the same. There was a deep pan on some '400's - my truck has one, stamped "Hydra-matic division of GM".

A good friend had a '73 Sedan Deville w/472 and TH400 for a few years. In some ways the 300CD feels a lot like a smaller version of that car - probably due as much as anything to that long, flat hood with the ornament guiding the way up front!

Thumbs up TH400 Help

Thanx guys ! .

I guess I'll just order up an alloy tranny pan for a 1980 Chevy truck and use that .

The Caddy isn't very high so no deep sump although I usually look for deep sumps, always nice but I'd hate my Brother to drag it and loose all the fluid and fry this good working slushbox .

? Anyone here know old Volvos ? . another friend has a PV544 that needs new final drive gears, I'm sue they're the same in later models but I don't know and he can't find a junked 544 anywhere .

TIA,
