Mercedes 300SDL Engine Knocking.
So I purchased a 300SDL and a friend of mind check it out and said it sounds like there is engine knocking coming from the bottom of the engine, rather than the top.
Recent service records show that the diesel injection system and glow plugs were are replaced. I want to service the car on my own, so what are some areas I check around to see if I can pinpoint the problem. Thanks. |

There are a lot of common "knocks" that come from the 603 engines. The most common are issues with injection and collapsed valve tappets (lifters).
How bad is this knocking? Can you supply a video or audio sample? The bottom end tends to be pretty tough on these engines, though faults can and do happen. How's your hot (15-20 mins on the highway) oil pressure at idle?

Also worth checking - vacuum pump on the front of the engine. They're known to self-destruct with potentially catastrophic results. Knocking from that area tends to be an early warning sign.

Also, how long do I have to wait for the engine to warm up at idle before moving the air filter pipe and valve cover out the way? I'm not too familiar with diesels...what am I looking for when I check the vacuum pump and injectors? I'm essentially trying to learn about the car as I do maintenance on it. |

Anyway, here is a video of it.

I was figuring valve train noise as well. I know merecedes source has a video on changing them, but I can almost bet my life he charges money for you to watch that video.... There are service manuals out there with procedures on how to undertake such a thing right? Or is this not covered in a manual? |

Certainly some tappet (lifter) noise going on. Some say synthetic oil will help clear them out. I had no luck with that and disassembled and cleaned mine. No more lifter noise.
The other "clack" noise you have going on sounds more like injection knock. Could be a variety of reasons for it. I have 1 cylinder (no 4) that does that noise constantly. Cracking the injection line stops the noise immediately. What I don't hear in the video is "bottom end" noise. Sounds like a combination of the more common knocks and noises from these engines.

You can get the manual at 190rev.net
190Rev - The Front Page 190Rev.net As a supplement to the manual you should be good if you follow this video up to about 3:37. You can leave the fuel system alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD3TEVzgrF8 pulling the cam is tricky. I think the appropriate timing for removal is with the timing marks on the cam and head lined up. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/357203-om602-camshaft.html You need to follow the loosen/tighten procedure or you can break the cam the book says. Of course, don't drop things down the chain alley.

As a matter of fact, I think you can leave the belt tensioner alone too. So maybe just set the time, I zip tie the chain to the sprocket, release the chain tensioner and pull the caps (per sequence in the manual).

moon161,
How do I find the manual for the the OM602 head removal? When I type in "OM602 head removal" in the website, nothing relevant pops up. Could you link me to the thread or article by chance? Last edited by Father Of Giants; 03-21-2017 at 10:09 AM. |

I actually found it here:
W201 Workshop Manual Download You shouldn't need to pull the head to replace the hydraulic lifters, only the cam. Finding things in the manual is a bit of a puzzle until you sort it out.

Also moon161,
what book are you referring to about the cam? I would like to purchase it if possible. Edit: You found it! Diseasel300, What exactly is diesel cracking? Is it when you give the injectors diesel purge? Last edited by Father Of Giants; 03-22-2017 at 08:01 AM. |
