pitman seal
I could swear I posted this a few days ago but I cannot find it so it either got removed or I never posted it. I am trying to find an old thread where someone replaced their pitman seal with the steering gear still in the car...it was a thread by a regular I recall....or anyone who has done it welcome to respond. I have a minor leak at the pitman seal and would like to give it a shot without removing the gear.

I did it in my '87 300D. I don't recall any tricks to the job. Make sure the pitman arm is indexed to the output shaft. I was concerned about the mass of the steering gear unsupported from below but it wasn't an issue. I replaced the shaft seal and 2 or 3 o-rings.
Look what I found - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/239322-124-car-pitman-arm-shaft-seal-repair-part-2-a.html Sixto 98 E320s sedan and wagon |
