Clearly a scam. I got the same thing last night. I haven't even posted about an OBDII car on this forum. The big red flag is that they're from a "big company" but don't say who. Perhaps size is in the mind of the writer?

ODBII scanner for a 617 or 60x engine interesting. Now if it could function like the one on a show I watched last night where a woman connected to her husbands car and could see all the GPS stops he made complete with individual names it might be of interest?

It was probably a waste of time to set up a email scam on a website that attracts guy who drive cars manufactured before the computer chips invaded the auto industry.

Sounds more like blanket marketing than a scam. Obviously not relevant to diesel engines. I did buy an OBDII bluetooth scanner (ELM327) for my tw0 1996+ gas vehicles. Amazing they can sell these for $10 w/ free shipping on ebay (after their cut) and works w/ free TorqueLite software. For my laptop, I bought a USB-bluetooth adapter for $0.99 w/ free shipping.

All from China. How can the U.S. compete with that? Reminds me of the scene in the movie Battle of the Bulge where the Germans capture a U.S. soldier with a cake sent from his mom. The officer realizes they can never win when the allies can afford that luxury and they can't even get fuel to the front.

They didn't PM me

Chances are they will actually send you a scanner. The Chinese do that to try to get business...USPS subsidized shipping costs into the US from china, so postage costs them about $0.40, plus the $0.50 scanner...if the sell one for $20 for every 10 samples, there is still profit.

I've had samples of random Chinese goods show up at my engineering office totally un-requested.
