what model 240d do I have?
 

I took a picture of the stamp on my frame but I'm unclear how to read it.
I need to get coil springs for the rear of my car. I'd like the african version if they are available and the african shocks.

You have a 123.123 from the data card.

Depending on the age of your car, 123123 may also be the first 6 digits of your VIN.

There's another plate that's easier to read which will say 123.123 even though it's on there. Also, the codes for all models are available online, so you'd just look up 240D there. 300D is 123.130 for NA and 123.133 for turbo models for example

The easiest way to do this is to e-mail Tom Hanson at the MB Classic Center, show your registration and request a build card for your car.


It will tell you all the wondrous things about it including minor particulars.


Assuming that the car is a 4 cyl with AT, you would have standard suspension. and use standard shocks.


I think the stretch limo 123 and the wagons are the ones with suspension leveling.


Plus your cylinder head would have a cam-driven hydraulic pump.

It looks like there are no springs or shocks for the 123.123 under the countries with poor road conditions.

I guess it might be trial and error trying to find some heavy duty rear springs for my 1982 240d 123.123.

I did find a shock that is supposed to fit a 240d that might be heavy duty. They call it a touring.

They made a fast 240D? What year and model were they fast?

The fast one has a stick.

I have a 4 speed manual transmission.

300D springs are heavier, use them .

I use Bilstein HD gas shocks on all four corners because they're better than the originals and yes, Mercedes did have HD shocks for taxis and limos .

Be aware that too hard of a spring will effectively freeze the rear suspension and make the car ride like a buckboard wagon , shaking your teeth loose unless you're carrying a load .

That's the fast one, with a tail wind and steep grade you might be able to hit 88mph and travel back to a time when these Dinosaurs ruled the planet.

88 mph would be a record for me the 240d.
I can get it a little over 70 before I start thinking about the engine blowing up.

I'm going to get some sd springs similar to the ones posted in this thread.

Rear W126 springs: 116 324 08 04

I sometimes pull a trailer so the stiffer springs would help. I'll get the 1 nub pads also.

I wasn't aware the W116 springs are the same diameter .

Consider good Bilstein HD shocks, there is a difference and you'll like it .

FWIW, my '82 240D W/ slushbox will eventually get up to 83 MPH as long as no wind and on a dead flat .

I usually call it good right @ 60 MPH on the flat, I charge the hills in the Desert of course but over speeding the engine is never going to be good .

I would never take a 240d over 55. Just too hard on it. They're too slow so making it rev so high and hard

I rarely go over 60-65.
I have a tach in the car that I pulled from a 300d and wired it into the dash so I can keep an eye on the rpm's.
I rarely go over 3500 rpms.

One of the reasons I bought the car is because it's slow. I want my kids to learn how to drive a stick vehicle and I don't want them going to fast which is easy to do on a gasser.
