Women Can Now Drive W123s in the Kingdom

But one should never drink soda inside the car.

Teaching my daughter to drive the 240D was no party, that commercial has a touch of Hollywood magic in it.

I wonder why they picked a W123. They seem to have sold well in the Middle East, but perhaps more because it is an iconic German car, and they are known for refusing to design-in cup-holders until recently.

I stuck the women in my house with a 62hp diesel to keep them and those around them safe.

Thanks for sharing.

The 240d has to be one of the most forgiving manuals to learn on. It is so torquey and deliberate it is difficult to stall. I recall crawling away from the curb in mine with little throttle. And then it is so underpowered you won’t get a good launch if you drop the clutch.

I mean learning to drive a 240d 4spd might not translate to being able to drive some modern low torque manual gassers.

It's what I learned to drive manual on, definitely forgiving. Though I certainly managed to stall it when I was learning. And still occasionally do on the right hill, haha. It's the only manual car I've driven significantly and it was a pretty big adjustment when I rented a 6-speed brand new Renault in England this year. Granted I was on the other side of the car and road, but in terms of the clutch it was much pickier about when I let it out. Got on the motorway outside the airport and immediately stalled it in traffic. Did it a few times at traffic lights. Drove about 800 miles over there and got the hang of it, but was still glad to get back to my beginner-friendly 240D.

Really cute ad, by the way, thanks for sharing.

Am somewhat surprised the A/C still worked.

Gotta love that paint color

It's a pity MB didn't import the coolest colors of that era to the USA: avocado green, canary yellow, and best of all, tomato red.

Those registration plates may be from Saudi Arabia, but the driver is waaay under-dressed. No way you'd see more than her eyes (and hands) in public. And in 'the Kingdom' -- for women at least -- black is the new black (as well as the old black, the even older black, etc.)

I'm always amazed at the durability of these cars. A few years ago I took a 240D taxi in Morocco that had 946,000 km on the clock . . . and that was before the odometer stopped working . . . and the driver couldn't remember how long ago that happened.
