No Sun/Moon roof
How rare is a 123/124 with no sun roof? I've only seen a couple and they were 123 wagons. I am guessing no sun roof means no power windows as well? I would love to find a nice 123/124 diesel with no sun roof for the extra headroom.

I hate sunroofs, I looked at several 123's with no roof when I bought this one so I'm thinking not so rare... Lucky me I found a car that appears to have one option, the right hand mirror. Everything else appears to be standard for North America. No heated seats, no power windows, hub caps, manual. The car is a stripper, just how I wanted it.

I've had a bunch of benzes and most had sunroofs. I'd say 8 or 9 of 10. ...Wagons included.

Bringing this thread back up as it seems most all Benzes have a sun/moon roof. So my question is, does any model/chassis in particular have more headroom than another? The headroom in my 1987 300D is not great and in order for me to not touch the ceiling with my head I have to tilt the seat quite a ways back which is not always ideal. I am talking early eighties to late eighties. It seems that the last time I sat in a SDL the headroom was no better than my D.

Why are sunroofs so common?
I once asked our local dealer rep........
His reply answered the color question as well. His response was that the majority of cars that were sold by the dealership were cars that were already on the lot. In today's world of instant gratification, customers are not willing to wait the 5 or 6 weeks to get a special order delivered. As a result, the dealers tended to order cars that were equipped with only the most popular (and saleable) combinations. The result is black/grey/white cars with sunroofs. Odd colors and no sunroofs seem to be the province of special orders. I've owned a number of eighties grey market cars over the years, and even a majority of them were equipped with sunroofs. Except W114 250Cs. I've owned four of them, and not one had a sunroof.... which my wife really wanted.

My 78 300CD has no sunroof, or passenger side mirror. The other 4 w123 coupes all have sunroofs. Do not notice any more headroom by not having a sunroof.

I have 3 W123 300d's, two of them have no sunroof and the third has a manual sunroof. All three of them are grey market imports. I think the imports more commonly come without sunroofs than the US models. I can take some measurements tomorrow if you'd like.

It's not just a matter of height, it's also where you fold in half. I am just under 6'4" but folded a little lower than normal which gives me a long torso.

That would be awful nice of you, a measurement from floor to ceiling right in front of the driver's seat would be nice!

It was very hard for me to find a manual transmission W123 without a sunroof. I am short so didn’t need the headroom, but just didn’t the liability of another area to leak/break - I was lucky enough to find a custom order vibrant English Red with manual windows, manual climate control, and manual transmission without a sunroof....annddd some lovely rust in a rear quarter that will be cut out this winter and welded back up. I’ll measure for you later today and post what I got.

Okay, I measured all three cars from the front left seat bolt which should give us a controlled measurement as you can see here: The 300d with a sunroof was 40" from bolt to headliner The other two without sunroofs were 41- 41 1/2" (One of them has a loose headliner that comes down about 1/2") So it looks like without a sunroof you gain about 1 1/2" of extra head space |
