Manual Trasmission

Hi Folks thanks all for helping me alot
recently i noticed some ticking noises from my transmission when coasting and maintaining a steady speed and also when i shift to neutral in speed
the speed of the ticking increases with speed
a friend told me that i should try changing oil first because its a long time since i changed it
but what i didnt now until recently
that Mercedes recommandes ATF as a manual transmission fluid  ? !! is that true ? i told that to some friends and they laughted at me  , they said that every manual transmissions owner on the planet uses gear oil
the last time i changed my transmission fluid i used gear oil and that whats mechanics recommandes also i think the previous owner used it as well ..
So what i should do ?
Go back to the ATF or stick to 85w90 or using another grade ? and what can make that ticking noise ?

A lot of transmissions/transaxles use ATF as the oil for manual transmissions. Not sure what Mercedes recommends, check your owner's manual for type and quantity.

If the noise changes with speed, it will be in the drivetrain, not the transmission most likely. Look for a failed flex disk, failing carrier bearing, tight U-joint, noisy differential, half-shafts, wheel bearings, etc.

aGT:

ATF is correct for MB manual boxes.

As to the ticking sound, per the above, all of the driveline components should be examined.
A vehicle-speed sound can come from within the gearbox and will be associated with the mainshaft/output shaft.
