1984 300D thrown rod -junkyard/salvage/fix?

My son, a 24 year old students-1984 300D had a oil leak he missed, ran dry and threw a rod. Local yard here in South Florida that specializes in MBs- offers the engine at $850 (90 day warranty), MB mechanic wants $950 to remove replace engine-after transport, misc parts, figure $2K total

Car cosmetically is in awesome shape, with new Tex Mex seat covers, new tires, recent brake job, tires, etc.

However, a local place is offering a deal on 2015 Chevy Volts that were lease returns that can be bought at $14K out the door and 2% loan at his credit union.

He is emotionally attached to the 300D as it was his first car he bought at 15 years old, but my wife and his girlfriend are pushing him toward the Volt.

what say you guys? Fix/Part out for salvage/junkyard yard...?

A new power plant for the 309D IMHO. That volt won't be worth half what you paying a month from now.

If your son wants to keep the 300D, then do whatever it takes to keep it if it's worth it.
I'm asking myself the same question after I just had a fiasco with my 300SDL. Only time will tell for me.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Well something worth having always comes at a price. Do you think 25 years from now people will be restoring a showing off their Chevy Volts?

Who knows honestly.

I have a feeling there will be a handful of people that will, but only because they are benchmark electric vehicles.

Regarding my car, I would of swapped engines and transmission but there are hardly any Mercedes that go into the yard, especially Gen II Q126's. In a way OP is fortunate to have a yard that specializes in Mercs. That sounds like heaven to me.

Worst comes to worst, someone one peach parts (will not give it away to anyone else from anywhere) will have a complete rolling chassis for a few hundred dollars.

If the car is in good shape and rust free, seems it would be worth it to fix.
