1987 300D first start

I was friended a 300D from Ngarover and got it started (was a lot of air in the lines). Seems to be running okay but smokes pretty bad off idle and accel. It sets at 85c temperature and oil pressure is good.

At idle it nails slightly and shakes a little. Do you think having the injectors popped and flow matched would help?

Im trying to get it solid mechanically before addressing electrical and vanity.

Also. Theres a V-clamp thats worn out between the number two and three cylinder exhaust ports on the manifold. Its leaking there. Any tips to close the leak before I rip into it?

Thanks

I'd get those injectors out and off to greazzer, and if that doesn't help establish where timing is at. I saw that car run before in videos and it seemed to always smoke and miss a little since he put that motor in.

Thats what Ill do then. Im sending it to a friend of mine with a frame rack to see if it all is straight and to install struts and shocks. It has decent power and rides ok. Just missing that benz tightness Im used to in my 190D. Thanks

Today it wouldn't start. Would bad injectors allow the fuel system to lose prime?

If they're dribbling, they could lose prime on the injector line in question, but not the whole fuel system. Look for an air leak somewhere allowing the system to bleed down. The lift pump should have a check valve on the supply side and the overflow valve should form a check valve on the return side. Be aware that the fuel preheater thermostat is a very common source of air ingress. If the fuel system gets air in it, it will all collect into a big bubble once the engine turns off and sits.

The 603's have a plastic disc in the overflow valve that warps and prevents a good seal. After fighting with that in mine, I swapped in the style from the 617 and have had 0 issues since.

Yes, that is the heater thermostat and yes, that is the check valve in the lift pump. Try tightening that fitting, there should be no diesel leaking there. If fuel can get out, air can get in.

Okay. I checked all the parts suggested and they were okay. Changed my plan of attack and checked the glow plug relay. The fusible link on the bottom had corroded through. Replaced the link and she fired first crank. Im running diesel purge through her now.

Cool! Glad you got it running. Feel free to ask me any questions I may be able to point you in the right direction. The rear pass window regulator is broken, it will need a new one. I wired up the passenger mirror backwards... simple fix. the wiring at the switch itself just swap them around. Fix that pinched wire I showed you and the tack etc should work again, I may have the idle control unplugged on the top of the IP, plug it back in after. The mono wiper, should be able to direct swap with the spare I gave you, I updated it some years ago to the newer version like I gave you. the heater you pointed to is not used, was part of the system for the SD the engine came out of.

I had a lot of fun and frustrating times with that car over the years and have at this point touch just about everything on it. lol. I know her.

I sure will. I appreciate the help and will keep in touch. She pulls solid after the purge but I am still sending the injectors out to hopefully rid her of slight idle nailing. While theyre out Im going to go through the suspension.

Suspension on these cars is fun.

What are you tackling on it?

After the injectors are healthy, drive the car hard for a bit, de-water the fuel tank, and if the nailing persists then think about rebuilding the delivery valves and inspecting them for damage when you have them apart.

Did some needed sound upgrades. Made some adapters to install 5x7 Pioneer speakers in the rear. Trial fitting in the pics. Those adapters really woke up the sound. Going to wrap them in carpet to match after sanding. Made five to four inch adapter rings for the front.

Swapped the stereo to a bluetooth enabled Dual. Ran RCA cables out for when my amp shows to tie in the door woofers for more bottom end. Then replaced the hood release that was really getting on my nerves. Next is replacing all the glow plugs when they show today.
