OM617 Prechamber advice

As the title states- I have a destroyed prechamber in my '83 turbo om617. Cylinder #3. Glow plug is broken off inside, injector is damaged, etc. Strangely enough the car ran flawlessly once it was warmed up- I only was removing the injector because it was leaking at the halves. That's when I noticed my brand new monark nozzle on that cylinder was demolished after ~500 miles

How do you guys recommend pulling the prechamber? I know it requires a special socket to remove/install the collar nut, and then also a slide hammer with a special fitting to thread into the prechamber.

Where do you guys recommend getting these tools?

Also, how do you push the prechamber back in? And where to purchase a prechamber?

Sorry for the excessive questions.

I have already purchased a replacement injector (somehow that injector got cracked) and also a replacement glow plug.

All other cylinders are fine.

If someone on here has the tools that I could buy that would be awesome. I'm located in Louisiana

Id even be willing to pay to "rent" the tools from someone I suppose. Just desperate to get this thing on the road again

Thanks

I'm no expert, but I'd bet you could use the broken injector to make a slide hammer adapter.

Search, as I recall several posts w/ photos showing a home-made slide hammer adapter made from a spare injector housing (post 2) or a bicycle tool (same thread, used on bottom brackets, Parker Tools?). First, you need to unscrew the collar nut which locks the pre-chamber in place. I recall that requires a special tool, like a socket w/ axial tabs. Again, people have fabb'ed from a socket and some bike tools are similar (for unscrewing free-wheels). I am sure there are factory M-B tools, but much costlier even used. I don't know where to buy a new pre-chamber. It seems they varied over the years, and I think your 1983 is the same as 84-85 (maybe down to 82), or perhaps my CA engines are different.

When you get the tools, go to a junkyard and remove a used pre-chamber.
If the ball is still present, the used part will work just fine.

Even if you don't use the salvaged pre-chamber, with the practice you'll gain the skill to confidently tackle the one you need to remove from your engine.

My recollection is that the injector does not thread into the prechamber. It threads into the collar that holds the prechamber in place. So making a device from an injector threads won't work. I would suggest you buy a new collar and sourcing a new prechamber is simple. I would not use a used one. I had the tip break off my car and it damaged the Piston as it banged around. Lucky for me it was the number 1 cylinder and is was able to remove it without having to pull the engine. I replaced all the rest at the same time. I would figure out what the thread is on the prechamber at get the right size bolt and cluged together a way to get a slide hamer on it. Getting it in is no problem. I used to tapbit in with a wooden drift. There is an alignment tab that keeps everything in place. The hardest part is getting the collar off. I used to chissel them out. Not the most elegant solution. The landing on the collar is curved so getting a socket on it with tabs to stay on is tough.

On the 60x engines you can use an old injector, but on the 61x you use the bicycle tool, either Park Tools CWP-7 or CCP-22 (same thing, just with or without a handle that you won't use anyway) welded to a slide hammer. Don't get confusled.

You have me worried, do you think my cylinder is possibly damaged? the glow plug snapped upon removing it, at least i think. I made a few turns with it, it made a "pop", then came out. SO i feel like it just now fell off. BUT, the very tip of the needle on the injector nozzle has also broken off at some point... so.

The car runs ridiculously smooth IMO, so hopefully my engine is okay

The real prechamber pulling tool used to be around $35 or less as seen in the picture. If it is european made you need a 12mm something slide hammer or an adpter to a an US slide hammer.

If yo get a US made tool it will be 5/8 x I believe it is 18 threads per inch (fine threads) on the slide hammer

M22-1.0 (Prechamber Puller 617)

M22-1.5 (Injector, Prechamber Puller Newer M Engines that use a splined retainer ring)
Not sure what is available in the tool rental area.

I had to cobble together an adapter for my slide hammer to work with my puller. You will definitely need the collar removal tool, it is nearly impossible to get the collars off, let alone on correctly without it. You will also need a prechamber seal. No need to replace the prechamber if it is not damaged once it is inspected after removal.
