W123 VCV - side vacuum hose?

In checking my vacuum system on my base model 1983 300D, I noticed that I don't have a hose connected to the side of the VCV, only to the top. Looking a various google images, it seems like most do have a vacuum hose connected here. What hose, if any, should be connected here (red arrow below)?

That is a vent for the valve. It should go to a black line which goes into the cabin. By venting it to the engine campartment you risk getting dirt and moisture in the valve. The other line going to that Y is the vent for the EGR valve which could have been deleted.

You should check the other connections as it looks like someone has been messing with it.

Correct. A black tube went thru the firewall to suck clean air from the cabin. If you suck in nasty engine bay stuff, the VCV may clog, which will mess up your transmission shifts. The tee simply shared the vent w/ EGR stuff. I think that was only on later engines, but since my EGR is long-gone I forgot. In addition to clean cabin air, you should add a small clear filter, which I recall the factory did. Similarly smart to add a small filter to the hose going to the I.P. stop valve (just below VCV). When you see oil in that filter, you know your stop valve diaphragm failed, and good to know that before it drips oil on your right foot while driving. You can buy the little filters as a "lawnmower fuel filter" or some VW shops carry them for their diesels.

It will still work the same I couldn't imagine 10psi be affected to much by the non ambient air in the engine compartment but if it's been like thst a long time u might have a lot of crap and particulates in your system.

I'd definetly go get a couple feet of vac hose and run it thru the fire wall. There should be a empty place in the vac hose harness at the fire wall if the hose is missing completly. The end of the hose lives above the gas pedal under the steering wheel. It connects from the vcv into nothing, just a vent hose.
