Compatible Alternator For 300SDL

Seeing the bearings in the Alternator are going bad, I would like to go to the salvage yard and find a Mercedes with a compatible alternator. Any of you guys know which ones are bolt on or require minimal modifications to fit?

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Any serpentine-belt model up through the mid 90s should be plug/play with the existing wiring harness. The alternator is not specific to the diesel. Sometime in the mid 90s they changed the plug on the back. You can still use the later alternators, but you'll have to modify the wiring to do so.

So long as you're shopping, look for a 90A. If you get a larger alternator you'll need to install a clutched pulley (though it's a good idea even for the smaller ones)

I know you’re looking for a used replacement,

But I just bought a rebuilt one for my SDL from a local parts chain store and paid $85 for it. Works great and didn’t break the bank.

No, not the same.

It will bolt in, but the charging wires need to be changed.

Bearings are replacable. Not to mention that any large metro area likely has a number of auto electric shops that could overhaul your existing alternator.

X2 "Bearings are replacable. Not to mention that any large metro area likely has a number of auto electric shops that could overhaul your existing alternator."

Take the car to an auto parts store that can test both the amperage output and the voltage. If both the amperage and the voltage are good, replace the bearings and the brushes if the brushes are worn. Replacing the brushes will likely require soldering. It is a good learning experience and if it does not work then replace the alternator.

Good luck!!!

Getting the front bearing out will be a three or four page thread. Just sayin'

What you're looking for is an alternator with the same terminations as your car. There were two variations used by Mercedes: plug-in or bolt-down. See photos. If you have a specific alternator in mind, you can tell from the photos attached.

Oh ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

x2, the bearings cost only a few dollars each and are easy to replace. The rear bearing literally drops into place, the front one requires a few more steps however. Youtube has many step by step videos that make the job easy.
They are a common standard size, nothing weird or exotic. Replacing the whole alternator because the bearings or the brushes or the regulator has failed is like replacing the whole engine because the belts are worn out.
