85 to 84 turbo swap?

Any advantage to swapping an 85 turbocharger into a 84 300SD?
Is it even possible?
Saw a nice shiny one (maybe rebuilt) in an 85 300d in the JY.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'd expect them to be largely the same, there shouldn't be any benefit to using a newer one unless the one in your car is wore out. Never hurts to have a spare though...assuming the price is right...

Boost gets you nothing without extra fuel to go with it.

Like Diseseal has said you're wasting time and money. without internally changing the injection pump there's zero point to anymore boost. besides, the 617s aren't really the engines to build for more power. It takes away their reliability and I've heard of guys at 300hp blowing the engine up in 400 miles. the 606 is the engine you build. it's built very well and had room for another 250hp easily. it's the supra of diesel engines

if you want to get stock performance, trash the alda. make sure timing is correct and the trans is adjust correctly. it will be plenty power for what it is

This is the setup with the trap-ox & other emission devices and maybe a different manifold?
It's about $35 at the JY.

The compressor housing is clocked differently on the trap-ox cars. The turbo may also have the ARV on it. The center cartridge is the same as the previous models though, so if it's in good shape it would still be worth it for a good core.

Not strictly true, before Forced Induction was banned from all the Mercedes forums (a move I highly support) he had installed a VNT turbo on his otherwise stock engine and saw a performance improvement on the dyno from it. Not only did it of course spool faster, but because of the more efficient design it heated the air less and flowed more, at least I think thats the theory as to the increased power from it (it was a long time ago). There was some talk on the STD forum that the stock turbos are restrictive on the top end even on a stock car.

At any rate, if the junk yard turbo is cheap, I'd grab it. At least then you can pull it apart, and maybe even rebuild it so that you can swap it into you current ride without any down time.
