W123 parcel shelf dye

Hello everyone, I've got the '84 Euro totally torn apart right now and I'm detailing every single piece of the interior. Not sure what came over me, but I've got 95% of the interior in my bedroom right now, and I'm cleaning and polishing everything to perfection. I even polished all of the interior paint

One thing I'm going to have to correct is the rear parcel shelf. It has faded too much for my liking, and I'm curious if any of you know where to get a quality dye. The carpet code is: 8331 cream if someone could point me in the right direction for a dye. Here's what it looks like

I also found a coin from Germany in the back seat from 1981 which is funny because I didn't find any US coins in the entire car and it has been in California for the last 33 years. The car was only in Germany from 84'-85' + time spent in production.

I found it weird, but I'm going to keep the coin in the glovebox for good luck.

I ended up going with SEM upholstery paint as recommended from a bunch of you here at Peachparts. I found a supplier locally, so I was able to determine in person the color "LT BUCKSKIN" was the best match for my 8331 cream interior. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Prior to spraying, I vacuumed the heck out of the parcel shelf and brushed it with a nylon carpet brush. I then taped the plastic speaker shrouds as well as the opening for the first aid kit to protect from overspray.

Then I sprayed 4 light coats allowing 10 minutes in between each coat, also brushing the carpet to one direction before each coat. I think the final result is a lot better than before, and it matches the interior parts very nicely. It cost me 15$, and I would recommend it to any of you thinking of trying this out.

I'll get a picture of it back in the car as soon as it is all back together. Anyways, I appreciate the recommendation from you folks above.

Thanks for reading,

Sonny

I suggest you try a test piece with Marhyde or Krylon plastic spray.... it does a wonderful job on carpets and fuzzy things like that package shelf.

If your OK with it not being all original, I found some matching marine vinyl that I covered the rear shelf with. Looks really good. It's easy to clean and dust off.
I removed the old material/carpet and glued on the vinyl with an underlay of thick felt.

I'm keeping the car as original as possible, but I may do that on my other Benzes in the future. I'm going to order some SEM upholstery paint as recommended from some of you. I'm just not quite sure what color to order that matches the existing OEM carpet.

That's the only hesitation I'd have. Their palomino was almost a perfect match to the original Benz color but I can't speak for the other colors.

You are probably better off time wise and results by just buying new carpet from World U.

Ya I know your right but I'm more just interested in how well it turns out for other future car flips and stuff

I'm really curious how spray painting a carpet turns out lol

greazzer 01-22-2018 08:43 AM

Some folks claim it is just as good as new ... however, I cannot recall seeing any snappies of the "good-as-new" ... I do recall seeing snappies which either showed a blotchy look, or a mottled look or a saturated black where the color dying was black. Quality dye is pricey. I think you can buy a yard of feintuft velour for around $50 to $60 bucks. I cannot see the savings for the parcel shelf

I used SEM on my 126 Palomino carpet and rear shelf. Shake the can well and hold it away from the surface. Put on light coats and let it dry between coats.

Buying a case online was less expensive than getting individual cans locally and I have some left after doing all of the carpet and the shelf.

Can u shoot a link of what "world u" is? Google searching the term yields nada nor a Google search adding "carpet" after 'world u' shows me any results.

Am I totally off the mark here or something?
