Fuel/oil lid gasket arbitrage
So for my W123, I see the genuine Mercedes blue replacement gaskets are the same part number for both lids (diesel and crankcase oil) and the price is $16-17 a gasket. I also see that I can get genuine Mercedes replacement plastic lids (lid + gasket, although the gasket is black) but for only $4 a lid!
Does anyone know if the gaskets in the replacement lids (part no. 0000101485) are the same size as the much more expensive replacement gaskets (part no. 1404710079), and what the difference in material construction is? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

All I can tel you is that those new caps SUCK and leak more often than not .
I use only the blue, 140 prefix cap gaskets ever since I discovered them a while back . If you're buying parts from The Classic Center, create a want list and add to it, submit as one order and the shipping will be effectively FREE with the discount from Dealer prices you'll get . I always have a 'to be ordered' list in my drafts, I add in some filters& other routine service items to make sure I'm getting full dollar value . It's an economy car, right ? =8-) .

Thanks! My local dealership never charges me shipping (even when parts come from Germany) and they’ve been great about getting me everything I need and have even given me a few things at cost when I balk and show them the genuine article can be had cheaper online. Guess the blue seals are still best - drat, thought I had figured out a way around $17 seals! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

None of my four oil filler caps show any leakage. Perhaps just a used acquisition from someplace like a salvage yard might suffice. The oil pan in the area of the filler cap will tell you if it leaks or not.
Personally I get stubborn on occasion when I think something is way overpriced for what it is. I tell myself it is based on principal rather than me just being cheap. I am probably cheap as well. Then there are the occasions where you cannot get a really needed part anywhere. Funny how the cost relationship flies out the window on those occasions. |

I have one of these blue gaskets and I also have 3-4 black gaskets that fit the old style metal filler caps. The 2 difference I have noticed is price and that the black gaskets swell when used on a gasser fuel filler cap. no problems on a diesel. buy the black ones that fit the metal caps not the plastic ones; they are different. i'll see if I can find a part # for you.
