High beams non-functional

I was replacing my cruise control amp a few weeks ago with a used one (still doesn't work, though...) and upon reinstalling the panel under the steering wheel, my high beams no longer work. The low beams are fine and the highs worked until the reinstall. Obviously, I've screwed something up, but has anyone a suggestion of where to start. I'm assuming the switch...but is there an obvious point where they fail?

Thanks to all,

Joel

Have you opened the panel back up to see if you knocked loose anything? Check the wiring harness, it is an obvious choice. Also, check to see if you just popped a fuse to the high beams.

These are just some general checks. It would be easier if I knew which model and year Benz you have.

Whoops

William,

thanks for your reply. In my haste to post the high beams question, I neglected to mention my car's year and model - a 1985 300td - my apologies for the oversight. I'm dropping the under-dash panel this AM to have a look at things. I'll post any findings...unless it turns out that it was the fuse...in which case I'll be feeling quite foolish.

Thanks again,

Joel

Joel,

Don't feel foolish. We've all over-hauled an engine at some point in our lives when all we needed was fuel in the tank :D :D :D .

Let me know what you find...

WmHarlow, is the engine of your 240D still original with almost 600k on the odo ?

gnolo,

Yes, it is the original engine. The tranny was replaced a month or two before I bought her. She had almost 400K on the clock at that time. The tranny that was put in was used, not rebuilt, but it only had about 150K on it. The starter and possibly the alternator are the only "engine" components that are not original.

The original owner took great care of her and followed maintenance by the book and then some. I think he wiped her down with a diaper before putting her in the garage each night....

The second owner was also great with mechanical maintenance, but lousy on the body and interior upkeep. He drove over 150 miles one-way to work, 5-6 days a week, and changed the oil every two weeks.

That is where most of the mileage came from. I drive her primarily to work every day and average about 600 miles a week right now. I didn't do the metric conversion yet, but I shoud be within 50K of 1,000,000 Km! I'm doing my best to see that she makes it that far at least.

On the weekends, I usually have the family with me so we drive something with working A/C and a more comfortable back seat (the kids say mine is lumpy).
