1987 Mercedes Benz 200D

I saw this posted at a Mercedes Shop. 1987 Mercedes Benz 200 D 4-speed ... Euro version. Noted a true work horse, and used in Europe taxi's. Claimed were a kind of vehicle some of which went over a million miles. Do you know were they a 5 cyl. na powered car? I didn't get to see it yet. Kind of curious, I was thinking.

It'd most likely be a four cylinder but I may have seen a picture of a 240d with a 3.0 five cylinder. They are kindof cool. With the lighter weight of the euro bumpers and likely stripper options they should give nothing up to a us spec 240, which with a stick is pleasant to drive imho.

87 200D is a w124 om601 2.0 4 banger, no turbo, 70hp. Usually equipped with a 4spd manual. Very Euro taxi spec. How slow do u want to go?

I will have to check on it, but I was thinking being an '87 200D might not be the same level as a 240D. Only 3 hp difference between the two of them really doesn't seem good. I thought beings used as a taxi. They would have to be a car with more get up and go! It's not real high mileage, and really good records and care noted.

I believe it is the same engine that is in a 190D (W201). I had an '85 190D with a 5 spd, and it was not that bad. I imagine the heavier W124 might be more of a slug than the W201 with the same engine.

The US market 190D had a 2.2L om601. The 200D was a 2.0.

If it's a diesel 4cyl like the 190 4 was it could be pretty bad with a 4sp in it. Beings it was directly Euro, it could be beefed up. I liked the 4cyl in them better than the 6cyl. The pic's I saw it looks cool, I think!

I bet it would be fine to drive. the 124 is not that much heavier than the 190 and it'll probably be a lower gear in the rear end to give it a bit more grunt.

A 190D 2.2 5-speed is about 2700 lb, has 0.84:1 5th and 3.42 diff. A 200D 4-speed is about 2800 lb, has 1:1 4th and 3.42 diff. Freeway revs should be more like a 123 300D NA than a 240D.
