STARTER FOR 85 300D

Anyone had any luck buying reman starter for 85 300D?

I bought a Bosch Reman for my 107 and it has worked out well. Only cost about $99 at time.

Choice seems to be to install a reman or have my existing starter repaired.

Only fault is that pinion doesn't always retract quickly enough and makes a noise as engine starts.

I bought one from a highly-recommend local rebuilder which failed while I was on a road trip.

The replacement one from O'Reillys I think has since lasted about 60K miles. I think if you get a good one, it should last. If you don't, you may have to swap a few times.

I have a Vato-Zone special on my SDL. The only problem it's ever had was that the moron who rebuilt it packed (and I mean literally packed) the solenoid with thick axle grease (the solenoid should be dry!). After a short period of functionality, it would take several attempts to get the starter to engage. Since cleaning the spooge out of the solenoid, it's never given me a lick of trouble since.

My car is a 1985 Canadian Turbo Diesel. Probably same as US Fed spec?

Vendors offer two different starters for this car:

PP/Altrom/AA/FCP SR67X
PartsMonkey/Rock/FCP SR70X

All are reman or rebuilt Bosch, but confusing because there are sometimes two prices. Maybe one is actually rebuilt by Bosch?

There are other available. Remy and AC/DElco. Also reman.

Anyone bought a starter for an 85 W123 turbo?

Probably have to buy in Canada because shipping is high on starter and most want core shipped back.

Crawled under car and checked part number on starter.

It is 0 001 362 600. There is an number above that number - 541 - don't know what that means.

How do we convert that MB/Bosch number into an SRxxX number?

Bosch SR70X is only for Cali 617 with the Trap Ox. The solenoid is positioned at the bottom of the starter.

The Bosch SR67x is for all other turbo 617 with the solenoid on top of the starter.

You have the SR67x.

This is quite confusing. As you say, my starter does have the solenoid on the top. However, when I went to this site and entered my VIN, it said I needed an SR70X. https://www.boschautoparts.com/en/auto And that supposedly is from the horses mouth!

Pelican Parts says that SR67X is for Federal cars https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3306/MBZ_3306_ELSWCH_pg1.htm#item0

From that Pelican link:
Quote:
Starter (Rebuilt)
Part #: SR-67-X-INT
Note: 2.3kW 617.952 9 Tooth Gear Direct Drive Federal Cars
Note: This is a rebuilt part, a Core Charge of $90.00 applies. What is a Core Charge?
So it seems Bosch must have this wrong, even with my VIN? Or is it possible that the SR70X would fit even if solenoid is on bottom? (Wiring probably wouldn't reach.) However, it looks like SR70X has dual mounting holes (one threaded, one not) so it could be reversed?

By the way, did you cross reference the actual number 0 001 362 600 against the SR67X? Is there a site that has that info?

This is the SR67X that seems to be what I need:

I often find Rock Auto to have good cross references on original part numbers .

I think you're making a huge mountain out of a mole hill here ~ you know what it needs already by the solenoid's orientation .

Just don't buy any local rebuilder's crap, that's not a fun starter (upper bolt, hate it !) to change .

In this case, Rock says I need SR70X. No cross reference that I could find.
Bosch say SR70X based on VIN.
Others say SR67X for Federal spec.
Nowhere do I find anything to say which model has solenoid on top, except for DV's post.

You may think I am making a mountain out of a molehill, but when vendors and even manufacturer show different parts what should I do? Just order any old starter and hope for best??

Post Correct Part

No, obviously not ! .

There are only TWO choices here, one has the solenoid on top like you say your car has now .

That's pretty simple to figure out for me .

Simple for me too - I need a Bosch 0 001 362 600. Now where do I get one of those

I think you are missing the point that even Bosch say based on my VIN, that I should have an SR70X when it seems that probably the SR67X is the one with the solenoid on top that I actually need.

There should be a cross reference somewhere to the original numbers.

No, I'm crystal clear here, you've been given the answer to both wich one to buy and how to chase the part #'s, you're just scared .

I can't say I blame you there but it's dead simple .

Look - Bosch have a web site where you can enter your VIN. They say that the SR67X is for the 300D up until 1984. For 1985 they say to use an SR70X. They are the ones that remanufacture these starters. You would think it would make sense to go by what the manufacturer says rather than from a post on a DIY forum.

Noone seems to have a cross reference to the original part number but ebay sellers do!)

In the end, DeliveryValve is likely correct. But I would like to know why Bosch says otherwise.

Vehicles compatible with SR70X
https://www.boschautoparts.com/en/ymme?partId=SR70X&partName=Remanufactured%20Starters

Vehicle NOT compatible with SR67X
https://www.boschautoparts.com/en/auto/alternators-and-starters/remanufactured-starters?partID=SR67X

Vehicles compatible with SR67X
https://www.boschautoparts.com/en/ymme?partId=SR67X&partName=Remanufactured%20Starters

That "seems" crystal clear, even if it is wrong.

I think I will get my starter reconditioned locally. We have two or three shops that do it incl a Bosch dealer.
