I have an el-cheapo hand tester from Amazon. Works just fine. Be aware that the name brand also have a pressure port, the cheapo ones from Amazon are suction only. Between the SL, SDL, and various other projects, I've used mine pretty heavily and it's held up as good as the 20 year old real Mighty-Vac it replaced.

For you specific use where you are simply measuring vacuum and you can find a place to connect it you can just use the free rental vacuum/fuel pump pressure testers at the Auto part stores.

If you need to test other things and you need to create the vacuum the hand held tester that you pump is needed.

Post Vacuum Tester Tools

I tried the brass Harbor Freight one, it doesn't hold vacuum making it useless for leak down testing .

Various places sell the MityVac tool for under $45, get one and be happy .
