is there any way to make the exhaust less stinky?
the older I get the more sensitive my nose becomes to the smell. 20 years ago, I actually kinda liked it.

Run veg oil or biodiesel. The downside is that smelling the exhaust will make you hungry!

The engine needs to be in excellent condition.
Valves, piston rings for good compression. All glow plugs working as this is a hot spot for the injector even when the engine running. Fresh injectors set at the proper pressure. Injector pump set to prevent over over fueling. The boost control on the injector pump working to prevent over fueling. A working EGR might help. A working particulate trap might work as this is a hot spot. |

I agree w/ the others. Engine in tip-top state of tune, run some veggie or biodiesel. For mine, some cetane boost really helped as well, removed the sharp acidic burning plastic smell.
I do not agree that the scent from burning veggie oil or biodiesel will make anyone hungry. It does smell better than normal diesel exhaust for sure, but it doesn't smell "good" - just better than normal diesel exhaust. It definitely doesn't smell like french fries cooking. At least none that I'd be willing to eat.

Buy something with an Otto-cycle engine? This is, after all, a Diesel. I kind of like the smell but either way I'm stuck with it - it's the price I pay for driving 2 trucks with a superior engine design.
Sorry - I got nothin'. Dan |

Run some used engine oil through the fuel system. After that, you won't complain about the smell of regular Diesel exhaust anymore.

Advance the timing, it will give a much leaner burn

Also, good valve stem seals and a turbo that does not leak oil in to the intake or exhaust.
Check for exhaust leaks. An external oil leak can be a scent trigger. A leaking fuel supply is probably worse than the exhaust smell. |

The diesel smell has definitely changed since the fuel formula was altered.
On another note in France about 20 years ago they actually put a "perfume" in the fuel to change the smell. I have no idea for how long or how effective that was.

Along the line of scented fuel - the DSR (Detroit Street Railway, the old Detroit bus company) tried a rose oil sent in the fuel back in (IIRC) the 50's. Made the busses smell like rose-scented Diesel - not pleasant! So that experiment, at least, was a failure.

In France they put scented oil in the tank to make the exhaust smell better. It's actually quite nice. Just got back from France in March

I find the smell has all but disappeared since the mandate for ULSD. Maybe you fuel supplier is cheating and filling his tanks with heating oil or off road diesel. The only other thing that might cause this is burning engine oil-are you adding any between changes?
Don’t monkey with advancing timing, that’s not going to fix this and may cause other problems. |

I still get a bad tank occasionally.
